Anyone else have some "bad habits" they are trying to break before med school?

For me, I woke up at 7 am, sat and drank coffee while I surfed the internet until 10 am. It's quite an enjoyable thing though, like when people used to spend Sunday mornings reading the paper. Except, this is my everyday now. 😛

That's not a bad habit. I still wake up at 10am everyday and surf the internet till 1.
Amateurs... 😉

One I've developed over the past year or so is staying up til 3 or 4 in the morning, and either sleeping in or needing a nap the following day. I'm getting better with it though, because I know that s*** won't fly in med school
Does your school have mandatory attendance?

The secret to med school is learning to be more efficient with your time. I'm just as lazy as I was in undergrad, but instead of learning 100 pages in 8 hours, I can now do it in 4 hours (fictitious stats). Which means I still have just as much time to lounge around and do nothing.

It's not about how long you study, it's how much/efficiently you study during a given time.

1. "I studied 10 hours on Saturday! Chapter 1 through Chapter 2! But I have to go back and reread it." --> 85%

2. "You are a genius! I only studied 2 hours. Chapter 1 through Chapter 5. I think I'm ready to take the exam though." --> 95%

I would kill myself if I were person 1 and I would kill to be person 2.

I would kill you to be a medical student like you... and probably take your spot....

This is exactly what has happened to me.

I have no idea why it's happening but it has gotten better since I installed f.lux on my computers. I have even tried to work out in the afternoon so I get really tired around 11pm. Problem is I'll sleep for 2 hours and wake up wired until 5am-7am.

I have been binge watching shows on Netflix so that might have something to do with it. In a few days I'm going to avoid my TV/computer and spend more time outdoors.

Wake up. Surf the web. smerk a berl.

Habits like these are easily broken by having responsibilities (e.g. school). Enjoy the summer, don't feel like you have to change just because school starts in a few months.

This is my exact daily routine lolzzz

My sleep schedule is jacked- I get back from the gym between 11:30pm and 12:30am. Usually sleep until about noon the next day. Definitely a bad habit.

I also cram sometimes. I've managed to get good grades despite it but that's only made the problem worse.

Dayyyumm I have this problem. Thinking of disabling Netflix (aka have my co-netflickers change the pw) next semester.

My worst habit that I'm going to have to kick during school is watching too much football. I can watch college football all day long if I have the option to. I can also spend all Sunday watching NFL games because I love playing fantasy football, the Bills, and the Seahawks.

I would love to fix my sleeping habits. I could get 10 hours a sleep a day, and I choose to get 4-5 and take a nap. I don't know why I do it. Lol. I like staying up late. For instance, I have class at 8. I might be sleeping at 2 am.

I may or may not currently be binge-watching Grey's Anatomy...

What's the best season? I have never seen even a single episode, but I'm thinking about changing that. I have high standards from scrubs of course

I was literally thinking that today, I must stop this same routine. I'm actually a morning person but somehow lack discipline to study in the morning.

Only girls watch that show, its like a soap opera

I don't know, I just finished season 2, which was pretty good. Season 1 was aight too. There's a big enough cast and plentiful subplots if the main romantic pair isn't your speed. I'm not a fan of the main couple, but I love a lot of the side characters and couples.

We still do a fantasy league in our school with a bunch of the guys in the class. I usually give myself enough time to watch one game, but that is pretty much my one enjoyable thing I can do on Sunday. If I had it my way, I would watch all the games every Sunday.

The worst habit to kick is sleeping late and waking up late. It sucks

Lol exact same thing for me!

Wake up around 8, drink my 3 cups of tea while I browse reddit, catch up on news, and do misc. things.

The WORST thing for me is that I've lost efficient studying skills. During my MPH, the coursework was less rigourous so when I did work or study, I'd always have some TV show on or something. I now cannot study without some movie or TV show on. Will try to work on that.

I feel my attention span has also decreased since playing more games and reading less, so I'm currently reading through the WoT series.

Another bad habit I am trying to kick is my poor typing skills. I type around 50-60 WPM with ~95% accuracy but I do it completely wrong. Been using typingweb to try to learn to type the right way (as when I type in my broken way, I can feel tension in my hands).

I love the WoT series!!! Although sometimes the breadth of events does get tedious when I just want to finish a cliffhanger subplot lol.

On-topic: I'm not really trying to break my lazy habits before school starts. The way I see it is that I'll wish that I could be lazy when I have lots of things to do! So I might as well chill now while I got time to spare. 🙂

My 3 suggestions would be:

- If you're going to a school that has some sort of mandatory in-class component and it's early AM, get use to that sleep schedule a couple weeks out. It will make the transition easier.

- Join a gym and get a workout routine going. Don't become the hypocritical physician that doesn't follow their own fitness and diet advice.

- If you don't cook, learn a couple quick and easy meals that can last a couple days.

Most importantly, relax and spend time with friends, family, and hobbies this summer.

I binge watch Grey's Anatomy--- I can't help it it's addictive!

Nervous tick(?) of biting my lip and the skin on the inside of my cheeks. Weird, I know. I consider it bad because it affects my studies since I'm not focusing on the material with all 100% of my concentration.
Plus, the rawness hurts when I eat salty or spicy foods but I continue to do it anyway since it heals within 1-2 days.

I do that too

Same here. I going to go without FF this year and see about next year. I will try and catch my favorite team though on Sunday.

Trying to either get up early and get some cardio or go for a 10-20 mile bike ride when I get out of work. Stay calm and ride the bicycle.

Magnolia bark supports bad sleep habits. 🙂

I would say binge watching shows on Netflix and HBOGo before bed is a habit I desperately need to break out of especially since I'm attending a school with mandatory attendance

I'm pretty sure i'm more like student #1. Can someone elaborate on the idea of being more efficient? Is it a bad habit to keep rereading over material in order to "feel" like you've mastered it? Is it more efficient to just keep moving through chapters 1-5 rather than going over 1 and 2 again before going to 3? Is there a more efficient way to consume info? Thanks!

Completely kicking these bad habits seems like a good idea, but it's ridiculous. Keep doing the things that keep you sane. 4-5 hours of sleep a night? No thanks. No football and/or fantasy football? No thanks. No wasting time on the internet? No thanks. No drinking? No thanks. You will have more free time during med school than you realize.

I did all of these things during first year and plan on it during second year, but moderation and timing in relation to my next exam is key. Granted, my school has recorded lectures so waking up early to go to class is not an issue for me. A fairly set routine will allow you to do all of the things you an enjoy and do well in school. I will admit that the first couple of months it was tough for me to adjust to the pace and I constantly felt sleep deprived and always behind. I stopped going to class and things changed, for the better.

One thing that helped me study when I needed to study was the program cold turkey. It's great for blocking reddit, facebook, or whatever website you use to waste time.

I've found that something that keeps me productive is to set a timer for 50 minutes or however long I want to study, and having my computer turned off so I'm not tempted to surf the internet. Seriously, I found that I actually save time by looking things up the old fashioned way rather than googling something which of course leads to checking facebook and then before I know it I find that I am on some random subreddit for a half hour.

You make sleeping till 2p, gaining 60 lbs, never exercising, and running 350 mL of Cpt. Morgan a day out to be something bad. Why must you undermine my lifestyle so?
