I'm applying to a final computational neuroscience program. Hopefully I'll be away next year on a Fulbright (I'll know in early March) before grad/med school. My plans for that time relate very neatly to my career goals. Do you think it would hurt my application to mention it since I will (potentially) have to defer?

I think I wouldn't say anything until you know for sure that you will get the Fulbright. I say this because I think it's better to ask for the grad school deferment after both programs accept you, rather than risk losing the grad program and then end up not receiving the Fulbright either. You could also ask the grad school in a general way about being able to defer your admission if you're worried they won't permit this.

I'm agree with Q. I applied for a Fulbright last year (ended up with an alternate) and they can really lag on their decisions. If I remember correctly, they said they would get back to me in March as well, but I didn't hear anything until late June. That's when they told me I was an alternate and that I would still be eligible all the way into August. So, potentially, I wouldn't have known until the end of the summer if someone dropped out and that I could take their place. This will depend on which country you're applying to and could even vary year by year. So I'd say that Q's advice is best.

good luck with the fulbright and grad apps!

A general rule of thumb for life: "Better to ask forgiveness than permission."

good luck with the app process!
