I'm a biochem major currently, but I want to switch to mech. engineering, as it would favor my overall future career choice. However, the first semester courses for our mech. engineering department are "engineering seminar" " Fundamentals of* Engineering"
which I'm not sure if I could take next semester or if I would have to drop in on this semester, 1 month in. Either way, I don't want to **** up my GPA. I've sent an email to our dean of engineering department, but he probably won't reply until tomorrow, so I'm just looking for some insight, thanks.

Oh, you're that space medicine guy! Well, go for it. Good luck on your journey.

Thanks, but for now I'm just planning on joining the airforce's pilot physician program, "one step at a time"

I would wait for the dean's response, or check out your course catalog in past years to figure out what's feasible. No one here will be able to give you an informed answer, and I bet soon enough someone's gonna say "why man? totally stupid move man!"

Right, I guess I'll just wait. I hate waiting for replies on matters like this.

It's not a totally stupid move, but it honestly doesn't make a big difference. Engineering might give you a lower GPA when you apply to med school, but it also depends on the rigor of the program.

Btw, I went engineering and it was pretty cool. Just stay on top of your game, because it can get pretty rough when you throw in pre-med classes. Try to get mechanical engineering research that is related to medicine too, as that can help a lot.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, it's awesome having advice from people that have already been through it. I'm still going to have to figure out how to get the premed courses in there though, isn't there a timeline for how long you can hold premed credits before you have to take them again when applying to med school?

At my school the first semester freshman year engr classes are piddly little things you can take whenever and not miss a beat. I would imagine it could be a very similar situation.
