Has anyone gotten an acceptance from the school after thinking that they bombed the interview?

Has anyone gotten an acceptance from the school after thinking that they bombed the interview?

damn..i wish that happened more often then not...

i know most people that bomb interviews are either waitlisted or rejected

I thought I bombed my first interview of the cycle at UMDNJ, but was accepted on Dec 1.

I just got Maryland's secondary application!! I thought Maryland send it's secondaries after interviews. Am I wrong? Isn't their cycle close by now?

Nope ... youre in good shape. I received a secondary application from Maryland, submitted it and got an interview invite email that same day. Good luck!

what do you guys consider 'bombing' an interview?

I thought I bombed my BU interview. Once the day was over I thought I'll never get in ( and BU was my 1st choice for personal reasons). Got an acceptance a week later 🙂

i thought i bombed my "state" school (thought i had rambled the entire time, thought the interviewer didn't like me,etc.), but still got in.

My interviewer at Maryland asked me to describe an ethical dilemma I have been faced with and how I handled it and I had a brain fart and couldn't think of anything to say to him! After a long awkward pause he just moved on to the next question! I thought for sure that would be my downfall but I guess not because they accepted me Dec 1st.

Fair question. Anyone want to explain??

Usually interviewers start out smiling and joke around with you a little. If your able to keep a smile on their face throughout your interview your doing good, but if you start to notice a change in how they talk to you or they seem to get really serious all of the sudden, your probably in the process of bombing it...

Sadly, my interviewer never seemed to smile or joke with me to start with. It seemed serious from begin to end with minimal eye contact 🙁 My past interviews were very conversational, compared to this one.

i thought i bombed my UIC interivew, but i got in

i thought i blew them away in my indiana interview and i got waitlisted

point being? your perspective does not matter, so dont stress out if you think you bombed an interview

Are interviews make-or-break situations for everyone or only for those whose applications are marginally qualified?

I think interviews play a fairly big role. Everyone they invite for an interview should be qualified. They're trying to get a feel for your communication skills, so that they know you could interact well with patients and what not. Also, it's a good way to see if you would fit into their environment, get along with staff, etc.

Dude, I really bombed the interviews at both schools I got accepted to and rocked the interviews at places I got waitlisted for. So for me, interviews haven't really been important.

Thats nice to know that an interview cannt screw you. Atleast not completely... 🙂

I think it likely varies by school. My interviewer at Stony Brook told me that they more highly consider your GPA, DAT, and quality of your undergrad (and of course state residency) more than your interview. Kinda made me wonder what the point of an interview was in that case, I guess just to see that you're not a lunatic. Schools who have rejected applicants with high DAT and GPAs after interview -- well that tells you that they must have cared about the interview, doesn't it?

My jaw started locking up hardcore(dang TMJ!!!) infront of my interviewers so I couldnt really speak well. 🙁

How embarrassing!!

... but I got in!! they probably have me signed up for TMJ surgery. :scared:

I think that's exactly what its for. They know who is qualified already, it seems a bit silly to base so much on what 1-3 people think about you after talking to you for 30 minutes.

I think most people that 'bombed' the interview and got accepted actually only think they did.

p.s. i interviewed at five schools and thought my best interview was at maryland. in december, i got into all the schools i interviewed at..except for maryland. lol so go figure

well i thought i did really well at buffalo...but then after i was like "wtf is wrong with me?" --- i got waitlisted

went to western..was like...damn i think i did really well --- and got in

I think the way you feel definitely is important (i mean sure there are exceptions)

You have to also look at the school's numbers. I mean Midwestern interviews 3000+ students and only accepts 110, so interviews must mean something, whereas some schools it is more like a 1:2 ratio so you are almost already in before the interview begins.

My Pitt interview was awkward at best, but they accepted me. I was really surprised.

Midwestern INTERVIEWS 3000 people?!!? No way

Ohio State interviewed ~100 in-staters and 80 out-of-staters for 79 and 25 spots, respectively, so getting an interview was a big boost to your chances. The first 60 in-staters to interview were essentially shoe-ins, they all but told us so during the day we were there. They rank applicants before giving interviews so being the first 60 interviews means you'd have to slip out of that 60 and 19 spots down after the interview to not get in... hard to do.

does anyone know how much weighting case places on their interviews?

Midwestern had 3000+ applicants and interviewed ~500 of them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's what you meant?

when i interviewed at case, the dean of admissions sat with us and told us what they were looking for roughly in the order of importance

1. overall and science GPA, and quality of undergrad attended
2. DAT scores
3. Letters of recommendation
4. Interview

he also added that the evaluation of the interview is just an extra piece of information that can be, but doesn't have to be, used by the indivudal members of the committee when they vote whether or not to accept you. so i got the impression that the interviews aren't weighted too heavily, but doing well can only help!

I thought I bombed my 1st interview, I was almost crying afterwards
We were on opposite ends the whole interview. He was one of those guys who likes to know people through random conversation rather than formal interview questions. First he started talking about british passport vs. american passport and which one was better, he said with the british passport you can do....I said: but it's not as good as the american passport, he was like oooh no... british is better. then he told me why did you do tutoring, you should have worked in a dental lab....I said I didn't know that dental labs accept undergraduate students without previous experience....he said Oh yes they do.
he also drilled me on 2 more points after that
I was thinking "OK I am screwed, let me just get outa here"
all I did after the interview was send him a thank you letter, indicating my strengths and what I can contribute to their program
My interview was in November and I got that school's acceptance in January.
I would say, whatever happens, just stay positive as if it didn't happen, and don't forget to smile

Thought I bombed UF and Columbia - UF because the interviewers were very nice at first but then it seemed like 2 of the 3 got increasingly more uptight towards the end. Columbia because I started rambling for a hot moment! Or so I thought. I got into both Dec 1st.

I do agree though that not all stellar interviews means 100% acceptance. I thought I put out solid work at ASDOH back in October, haven't heard a peep yet.

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted.
