bad masters GPA

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so not in a good situation here.
haven't finished my masters yet but im going to be applying with a masters gpa of something close to a 3.0

my undergrad is around there as well. I can potentially finish my masters with a 3.3 if all goes well.
now I am going to apply broadly. do I even stand a chance?
I am going to be retaking the DATs in the summer

Having a 3.0 in a master's program is going to be tough. Most schools look to that to see if you can handle their curriculum. My advice will be to talk to your advisor and see what their thoughts are and if anyone from your master's program got in with similar stats and with tips on where to apply. They will probably have the best information for you.

As an applicant you are trying to prove that you fit into the dental schools’ core competencies. By getting a same masters gpa as your undergrad gpa more often hurts you than not. Because doing a masters on a path to dental school means you are trying to prove to admissions that your undergrad gpa is not the clear representation of who you really are. This would get even worse if you don’t do well on your dat (prob almost no chance if this happens even if you applied broadly, sorry). Now that you read my narrative, I would suggest to do your upmost best on the remaining masters classes and study that dat as if your life depended on it.

Your current masters GPA will not cut it even if you do well on your DAT. Unless you get 26AA. I don't know how many units you have left in your masters program, but if you can bring your masters GPA close to 3.5 then you may have a chance. Otherwise, you may have to speak to your academic advisor for an alternative. I did know a person who was in your position and she had to do another masters program in order to get into dental school.

You may have to do another Masters program. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but you're supposed to outperform your Undergrad GPA, not get the same grade 🙁

Good luck on your DAT though. Wishing you the best.

I'm in the same situation. I did an engineering masters and finished with a 3.4. My undergrad GPA was 3.6. I'm hoping that what my advisor said is true, which is that because I did it out of my own interest rather than to make up for a poor undergrad GPA, and the degree has nothing to do with dental school, I should be fine.

An MA/MS in basket weaving does not carry as much weight as the same degree in the bio sciences/engineering.

Unless you are the person that is not going to work and is going to take 2 years to do a Masters then how are you supposed to get a 3.6gpa? I am basically in the same boat. I have a full time position as an ortho tech and am doing research with an oral surgeon from Rutgers school of dental medicine. Do the best you can and show that you're committed. Unless you have loads of money and lots of time, doing another Masters is going to be tough. Wish you the best.
