hey guys,

I'm new here. I just finished up another semester as a pre-med student, however; I have run into some problems with a professor. The entire semester the guy was continually late to lecture and lab (about 10 minutes out of a 50 minute lecture) and usually a few for lab. At first I brushed it off because I was getting A's on all the tests, but a lot of other kids were getting upset. I decided I'd just study harder on my own. However, as the semester rolled on, I ended up with an A-. Basically, it came down to 2 questions (the grade for the semester was based off of 5 exams and I missed an A by about 0.5 points. I went to his office and discussed it with him and he told me that if I could prove him wrong on two questions on the resulting last exam, he would bump me up. I had what I thought were extremely good arguments on two of the questions, but he would not budge.

At this point, he pointed out an easy question that I got wrong. I said, yeah I realized that it was wrong when I saw it on the visual portion of the exam. And he replied....oh well why didn't ask you for your exam back? And I replied well I didn't really think that would be appropriate. He then proceeded to tell me that it was my fault for not asking for an exam back that I had already handed in and that he gave the exam back to a few students. I told him that this was not fair and that he should have either kept all of the exams or given the entire class the option to have the exam back after the visual part of the exam. He then told me it was my fault for leaving when I was done with my exam. Okay.

After talking with him, I became pretty insulted because he was rude in many areas. I also still feel as though I earned an A in his class. (his questions are ridiculously ambiguous, exams are usually out of 50 questions....so it is pretty much impossible to get an A). I talked to another professor who I am close with and he believes I should appeal the grade over him. I am not usually someone who would get upset over an A- if I knew that I had earned it, but in this case, I really feel like his poorly made up exams are the culprit. He also once flat out refused to help me with my dissection during lab and told me he was going to his office instead.

P.S. I have this guy again next semester......what should I do? Fight the grade? He already has a poor impression of me.

Question: Maybe I missed it, but what are the classes?

Also, my opinion is just grin and bear it. You'll have him again, you do not want to get too far under his skin. I royally pissed off my prof in physics II. The prof insinuated I was a liar so I argued with him until he said "Oh yea, you are right, I was not at my office hours that day." Well that was my only interaction with him until one day he showed up to class 30 minutes late (50 min class). We had HW due, but his course was during another professor's office hours, so after 15 minutes I bailed and told my friends to text me if he showed up. Well while at my other prof's office (I warned her), I got the text saying "he just showed up. There is going to be a pop quiz." So I went back to his class. I ended up walking in at what would roughly be 35 minutes late, and he goes "Why are you so late Mr. *my last name*?" So I explained myself. At which point he stared me down, then took my homework and handed me the pop quiz. In the end I needed a 60 on the final for an A, I got a 50, because one of my answers he "could not tell if the units were right" costing me 20 points. Sometimes, it is better to take the lump and just move on.

I would fight the grade, but keep in mind that he'll do everything he can to ding you on points in the next term. Try to get in another class and get that A- changed into an A, IF you have a good case.

I wouldn't contest the grade if I were you, especially if he is the only person teaching that class next semester. I'm sure the situation sucks, but if you need to take that class, you just have to grin and bear it. If the same thing happens next semester (getting a lower grade than you deserve), then definitely appeal that grade since you'll be done with the prof.
