bad programs

I always hear about the best or good programs. But what about bad ones (or to put it nicely --> need some serious improvements)? If someone didn't get interviews at say Baylor, RIC, WU, keesler, ect, what would be some next best programs?

All I hear is that the Florida programs and Tufts and Boston Univ. wouldn't be super. any takers???

When I interviewed at Univ. Wisconsin's PM&R residency 5 years ago, the program director himself told me the program sucked during my interview. Hopefully that has changed.

I wouldn't make the blanket comment that all of the Florida programs suck.

The only program that I know in detail is the University of Miami. I am very fond of both the chair (Diana Cardenes), and the program director (Andrew Sherman). They are actively recruiting strong faculty members. It is a decent program that I anticipate will be a very good to great program shortly.

i agree. the Miami program if very up and coming. Dr. Sherman is gonna turn that program into something great.

Tampa: i wouldn't even apply there without some sort of attempt at a website. come on. this is the computer age and that's who's applying to residency now. whoever's running that program needs a little touch of reality and realize an awesome website would do wonders for attracting more applications.

i don't really have specifics, but i've heard some bad things about that program too. i guess the program director isn't really nice to his residents and isn't willing to listen to them regarding making the program better. as though the program is there for the cheap labor and not to actually train great PM&R docs. but that's just hearsay

well, I wrote about tufts in my interview review, and some of the changes canot be made for $$ reasons in how residents are funded. And only pgy2s I heard of had nothing good to say but the pgy4s didn't and said you work with him 4 months in yoiur training they got to know him then better and like him. He's just not as personable. That's better than nothing. So, I don't think it's that bad. BUT.........i'm not in it. BUT I did email every single resident (they only take 3/year) and got most to reply.

BUT I've heard some things from attendings around the states like, "Emory is not a good program." or "hopkins is not a good one b/c the chairman is new and it's unstable."

what does this mean? what is good? bad? and unstable? new orleans is unstable. i don't think JH is....

thoughts? comments? residents? and attendings comments???

Everbody has their own working definition of "good".

A good program is one that provides the type of training that you are looking for combined with the most intangibles/perks (location, salary, call, benefits, etc.)

If you don't know what kind of training you are looking for, then a "good" program is one that provides "decent" training in all areas, or another way to look at it-a program that has minimal deficiencies.

If i didint match Orhto i would have gone to Miami......Dr. Sherman is a great program director and is really trying to bring the best residents and attendings to Jackson....Its an up and coming program and they are going to graduate there 1st class soon so I would look @ were those guys get fellowships...

I'm posting here only because NYU once had / still has a sort of bad rep.

It's not bad at NYU; I'm there now. Dr. Moroz is the new director and he
seems to genuinely care and listen, and things are changing rapidly. This
old dinosaur of a program needed an injection of vitality and modernity, and
by golly we're gonna do it.

Elsewhere in these forums I posted a long, long review about my program,
so I won't repeat it here. It's not sugar-coated.
