So this is my first post on SDN. I've been lurking for a while and decided to finally break the ice and post. Here it goes...
Well this is my fourth semester of college (I'll be a junior next semester). So far they have all been pretty good not stellar but pretty good. I'm rocking a 3.475 gpa atm. Well this semester is finally coming to a close and I can tell you its been one hell of a ride. My classes consisted of physics I, Ochem II, Micro, Physics I lab, Evolution (I eventually dropped), and two one hour finance courses. The semester started out pretty good. I was on top of literally everything and aced all my first exams and kept all my homework up and was studying religiously. Then I had started a new job which ended up being a major headache and took up more time than I thought would ever be necessary for a pharmacy tech position. I got into an ATV accident with my cousin who had some serious injuries but I was fine and wearing my seat belt. He had to have several surgeries which was pretty awful (hes finally able to walk around some. Yay!). I also had major vehicle issues which resulted in me being up until all hours of the night into the early morning. I eventually sold my money pit *cough* jeep *cough* and bought a truck which I assumed was fine and spend all but $400 of my savings on. That truck had a hole in the gas tank which if it wasn't for my amazing gf I wouldn't have noticed it at all at the gas station on the ride home from buying it. I got that patched and literally the next day I was leaving class when my alternator went out. I called my dad and we changed it in the parking lot at school which imho is pretty cool. Then 1 week later the power steering rack went out which cost about $400 to fix which unfortunately took the last of my savings and then later after buying some tools and a new catalytic converter (which I proudly put in myself) my last scribe pay check and first pharmacy pay check. After all that I had a bit of road rage on my way to class and went to hit the horn only to realize I in fact did not have a horn. So I had to go and get a horn to get it inspected which I finally did the other day. Then because of the stress of money and school and work my girlfriend an I got into an big fight and split up for about a week until I realized how big of an ass I really was and she was simply trying to help me. Well like I said the first tests went amazing well the second tests not so much. I found that I had lost track of time and they snuck up on me. I was so unprepared and did not do as hot as I had hoped. The rest of the semester has simply been me playing catch up. I've managed to do a little better Micro I will finish with a B+. Physics lab I will finish with and A. In Physics I will finish with a C which I worked my butt off for. In my finance classes I will finish with and A- and an A. In Orgo II I'm honestly not sure. I take the final tomorrow and the highest grade I can get at this point is a low B almost a B- if I get a 100% on the final and honestly I might fail cause lord knows I failed the last test with a 29% (I really studied I promise!).
Honestly this past semester has been the absolute worst but as I talk to some of my friends who are switching majors and no longer pursuing medicine because of how this semester has went it makes me pretty sad. Will I get into Columbia's med school? Probably not. But if I fix my study habits, identify where I went wrong and really work on myself this summer and apply myself next year I think I have a fair shot at a medical school. I plan on volunteering this summer and starting a volunteering program through my mom's home heath agency (I've already spoken to her boss and he's all for it!). I see too many people giving up hope but guys there's so many parts and pieces to a med school application. Sure GPA is a big part but if that part is lacking then push harder in other aspects of your application. Just don't lose hope guys you know it ain't over til the fat lady sings!
