I am a DO student intending to apply for MD OBGYN programs this year. My step 1 score is alright, a 223 but i just got my step 2 score back and i totally bombed it (got a 215!) what should i do? I was intending to apply to reasonably competitive residency programs but this score is completely unexpected! Please Help!

What were your comlex scores? I am almost the opposite of you; I got a 216 on step one and opted not to take step 2 yet and see how many interview invites I got first

It'll hurt you, but I don't know if anyone here can tell you exactly how much.

If I were you, I'd apply to a lot of less competitive programs as well. I'd probably also apply to a backup, maybe FM programs with a big OB emphasis, etc.

Not trying to be rude, but how is this score completely unexpected when it's 8 points away from your other step score?

Agreed that you still have a decent shot at lower tier ACGME OB programs, but should consider a backup plan be it ACGME FM or AOA OB (if your COMLEX scores are good). Try to get in touch with your school's alum that matched ACGME OB for advice.

Because they're quite different scores. He scored in the ~35th percentile for his Step whereas he scored in the 8th percentile for CK. The averages and spread for the CK are much different, thus it is truly a MUCH lower score.

As for the OP, I actually disagree. Unfortunately, I would not take a chance with your scores for ACGME Ob/gyn.

This. It's a redflag to go down from Step 1 to Step 2 CK. Most people go up 10-15 points.

I mean, all OP has to lose is money for the apps, right? If they don't get enough invites, then they're not really taking a chance, as long as they still apply AOA also. If I had the money/credit, I'd do it, then just go into the AOA match if I didn't get enough invites.

OP not matching ACGME OB. If they wanna drop the money to at least see if they can get interviews go ahead. Have a back up (primary) plan.

It's called, "life goes on".

You'll get over it. What helps most is the realization that their job is not the most important thing in their life, which is a brainwashing concept on SDN. You'll be a physician in the U.S. So you'll be well compensated regardless, so don't sweat it if you have to do family med or something and just deal with a s*** location for a few years.

I guess you don't buy that medicine is a calling that SDN members are parroting in every thread...

It is a calling when you're stuck in a molecular bio lab after undergrad and shadowing here and there ie the #premedLyfe.

It is also a calling if you're gifted enough to rock every exam thrown at your face during medical school to get the field you were originally most "passionate" about. However roughly half the med students settle for something short of their dermasurgeon specialty that they had a calling for before.

TLDR: yes.

apply broadly to MD OB/gyn residency programs.

all you have to lose is money, which at this point whats a few thousand when you're prob hugely in debt. Just have a plan B in mind.

I interviewed at places that had more competitive people than me, score wise. of course score matters a lot but still you never know what will happen in the application cycle. And by applying you really have nothing to lose, besides something that you'll eventually get back (money).
