Bad surgeon behavior

We have a transplant surgeon at my hospital who is notorious for throwing temper tantrums. He even went as far as to throw instruments in the OR. Management had a talk with him and basically said if it happens again then he is gone. The only reason he is still here is because he makes the hospital a lot of money…. His temper tantrums have since improved
 
🤣 you guys think this is abusive? This is day to day at a couple of the hospitals I did residency. Always told to ignore it and get through as they make oodles of money and the facility will not side against the surgeon.

Eg. Abusive orthopod shouting at the top of his lungs at everyone in the room, massive popping neck and forehead veins; keeps pointing and repeatedly squeezing a skin stapler at the circulator. She tells him to stop. Her says "relax, nothing can happen due to the built in safety mechanism, it has to be pressed against something to deploy". Somehow (squeezing one too many times?), it deployed, and a staple from the (used) skin stapler hits the circulator. Gets "anger management training " from admin.
 
Is this surgeon worse the anesthesiologist Tiffany Ingram MD? Who was also recorded on tape.

I have personal friends who have worked Tiffany and will defend her. She is a good person from what I have heard from northern Virginia and military crnas. I got the surgery center in Florida to get her some work when she got nailed with the 500k verdict (which her malpractice would not cover).
 
Definitely seen it in CT surgeons in my area. Operated while clearly intoxicated on multiple occasions and got reported but still didn't get fired. Hospital wants money, patient didn't die so no problem.
 
What an utter loser. It’s so cringe to see that sort of behavior.

My definition of "good person" has never been how they treat only their friends. There's a reason seeing how someone treats a waiter while on a date is a great test of character.

Sorta. People act out in their own home environments and are comfortable to act out.

Restaurant managers yell at their own wait staff (if you ever had a job when you were younger waiting tables).

There is the difference between a working relationship with staff (surgeon/or staff) and a casual encounter with a waiter.

You don’t see a surgeon yelling at a random encounter with a patient/family the way they yell at staff.

Sorry, what is interesting here? This is a typical Monday where I work.

I'm more surprised if I get through an entire day without witnessing a temper tantrum.

Surgeons are idiots with minimal accountability.
 
The only thing that can get a surgeon fired/lose privileges is not this behavior.

We all seen this type of behavior. We seen surgeons maim patients.

Sexual harassment is about the only chance to get rid of a surgeon quickly.

Where I work the jerks are exceptions and they’re not remotely close to this a**hole.

When I was in medical school there was a junior transplant surgeon who was very odd and threw fits in the OR. Everyone tried to tolerate him because the transplant program was struggling and they didn’t want anymore bad PR. Well, a classmate of mine was scrubbed into a case and this guy threw one of his tantrums. He ended up throwing a scalpel down and it cut my classmate. He was told in no uncertain terms that he was to complete six months of mandatory anger management therapy and change his behavior or he would be fired.

I’m not sure how far my classmate went with the issue but I personally would have had my tuition waved.

My cousin is a urologist. He had a senior resident who was prone to fits but they got along fine. They ended up in different parts of the country but still keep in touch. About 10 years ago that guy was forced to go through anger management. Afterwards he told my cousin they it was one of the best things he did in his life.

Sooner or later incompetence will get you fired. But NOTHING will get you fired quicker than a sexual harassment complaint - I've seen it first-hand. Next day - gone.

Incompetent does not get rid of surgeons.

This neurosurgeon has paralyzed plenty of patients including young patients having routine back surgery.

What finally got him finished off was he didn’t round on his patient. It was not the complication.

That’s a pretty weak remedy.

I mean, the guy threw a knife (with a patient’s blood on it?) at someone at work and cut them. That’s a felony. Civilly the med student should also be able to get money from the surgeon, hospital, and med school.
 
When I was a student, there was a vascular attending that we all knew we weren't allowed to work with. He was notoriously a mean, angry man but what got students out of having to work with him was his throwing a scalpel at the ceiling during a fit and having the scalpel get stuck up there...above people's heads for the remainder of the case.

Don't know why people don't deal with this kind of bad behavior. Screw the "bad for business" argument.
 
Anything physical should also be a one way ticket to being fired. There is literally no excuse.

Beyond that I think if the person knows they ****ed up, there isn’t a need for additional “feedback”. I also think there is virtually never a need to argue about anything in the OR. I saw this happen often in academia, thankfully less of an issue in community.

I worked with a surgeon who had done a few anger management courses. He didn't throw things in the OR when I was there, but he had an aggressive "thanks" when he was mad.
