Hi y'all, I'm a junior and I just finished my first junior year semester. I'm getting ready to apply (and take my MCATs) and I'm looking for some advice. Basically, my spring semester sophomore year was my worst ever. I was in the middle of a heart-wrenching break up, my uncle passed away, and my mother fell and hurt herself so she needed some care over the weekends (I know, "excuses", but they really did affect me).

Before that term, I had one B+ in a science class (physics) and a 4.0 in everything else. But that term, I got a C+ in Orgo 2 and 1 B+ in another and my GPA plummeted. I pulled back this semester with a 4.0 in some upper level electives and I'm still sitting at a 3.8cGPA but I'm kind of concerned that one C will destroy my chances at MD. I have extracurriculars and I am sure I will pursue this dream of mine regardless of anything, but I just want to know my chances if I decide to apply as a trad. Anybody have a similar story?

Just apply to a lot of places. At least in my day 1 C was not a death sentence.

Sorry about your personal issues/losses, unfortunately we don't live in vacuums, my father passed during my 2nd month of internship...can you retake orgo 2 and get a better grade?...if not you will have to kick some major a$$ on the MCATS. You may want to post-pone taking it. I would go so far as to focus on finishing up undergrad strongly and then get into some type of research/medical-related extra curricular activity while studying for the MCATS (you have time, I started med school at age 30)...DO/Foreign med schools/PA programs may be options.

your cGPA is fine, but what's your sGPA?

you'll also get better advice and a better idea of where you stand once you have a solid MCAT score. I'd focus on getting as high of a score as possible, but MD is certainly not out of reach.

You'll be fine- just keep the grades up and be honest and upfront about your pitfalls. As a wise man once said "everybody makes mistakes.. everybody has those days.." But on a more serious note- it's important to learn to maintain focus on academia (when you need to) regardless of what is going on around you or you won't be able to succeed in medicine.

you're okay i had a B in biochem which dropped to a C+ after the final so i feel ya 🙁

Oh, quit fussing. You scenario is very common and hardly lethal.

Just make better choices in the future.

I was worried when I was in college in this situation and I promise you're still solid. Just stay strong!

you had a dip that is explained by an acute problem and now you have rebounded. seems fine to me
