Hey everyone so a couple months ago I made a post about how I got into some bad terms with my PI and that he asked that I no longer return to his lab due to my lack of attendance which I completely take responsibility for. I worked in his lab for about 1.5 years and I was able to receive some grants through the schools undergraduate research program and I was also able to published the work I conducted in my schools undergraduate research journal. Now my question is, since I'm in bad terms with my PI, how bad will it look for not having a LOR from him when it comes time to apply? Thanks a lot everyone.

I wouldn't worry about it.

personally, i would go and apologize now, then dissapear, then slowly build up the relationship again. see if you can get back in the lab, given that you did really good work. everyone makes mistakes, if you grow from them, and your PI sees this, theres no reason why it shouldnt be seen as a plus.

how much time til apps?

I'm applying for the next cycle so that's still quite a long ways off. I have already apologized to my PI but it seems that he wouldn't want me back in his lab. I'm trying to get involved with another lab now that I have much more time but If I do join another lab, would it actually look pretty weird if I received a LOR from a new PI as opposed to my previous PI in which I received some grants and published in my schools undergraduate journal?

it probably would have really helped you to have a glowing letter from a PI, but they won't care if you didn't happen to get one from him. they don't know the politics behind the situation, so they don't know why you didn't get one.

don't worry about it. just focus on building new relationships that will lead to good LORs
