Looking into purchasing a new bag for school. I have a very high quality bag, but I'm trying to elminiate as many external visuals of my past as possible, and carrying around a digital camouflage backpack doesn't help with that goal. How much stuff does the average vet student carry? I'm currently planning for my tablet (about 4lbs), maybe a couple of books, and assorted pens, pencils, and backup notebook. Since my transportation of choice will be two wheeled, I need to keep the load light and tight. I'm looking at bags by the designers with which I'm most familiar - Camelbak and Blackhawk. Anyone have suggestions for a good, rugged bag that will do well in a harsh enviroment?

I wrote it in the thread, but I'll mention it again...I LOVE my timbuk2 bags. Great for cycling, pretty indestructible, and waterproof.

Well, if you really want to blend in, just wait and I'm sure Hill's gives out free backpacks to NCSU! Mine broke 2 months into the first semester, but I know some second years who still have theirs. If you're looking for quality 😉, I use an Under Armor backpack and love it; I've also heard good things about North Face.

I'm really partial to Kelty. I've had this one in red for 4 years now and it's still holding up great. I carried it to class every day during undergrad, and I've taken it hiking. It definitely holds up well! They make larger sizes too--usually all I carry in mine is my 14 inch laptop and a couple of notebooks.

I've had a Jansport for years! It's awesome and lasted YEARS for me. I'm sure I'll carry it to vet school with me haha.

I vote for LL Bean.
I've had my backpack for going on 9 years and it has proved to be a trooper. To change things up a bit though I'm thinking I might want to try one of their shoulder bags...we'll see.

I had mine all through high school and undergrad. Even had it the first 2 years of vet school. Then our male kitten lost his testicle privileges on it (he peed stinky male cat urine on it). So I got an L.L. Bean bag courtesy of the husband's parents and Apollo was castrated.

What is it with backpacks?! My has-been-neutered-for-5-years (and checked for uti's numerous times) cat pees on backpacks every chance he gets. Jansport included...

I love my North Face Recon... though I may end up having to retire it this fall if I can't manage to stuff a laptop in there.

I got it fairly cheap at Marshall's a couple of years ago, and that thing is practically indestructible. I inadvertently doused it in hydrochloric acid last year, and it survived virtually unscathed.

My fabulously tacky JanSport bag reluctantly found itself in retirement a few months ago when Nicholas decided to protest the inordinate amount of time I was spending cramming for Biochem by spraying the thing. FAIL. (Cat only misbehaves during exams... I have a feeling he's going to love vet school. )

I have a 511 bag and it is great. Been through several field exercises, scenario paintball games, etc and it still looks and feels new.

My boyfriend moved back to his hometown in England in August and left a bunch of stuff in my apartment...one expensive backpack from Zumiez included...I went to look through some of his stuff sometime a few months ago and it STUNK! He was very upset that one of the cats had peed on it and I threw it out I find that I definitely need to keep anything fabric-y off of the floor and in some storage area like a closet. For some reason in our previous apartment the cats never peed on things like they were in this house...but there was a new cat in the new apartment...I believe she was the culprit.

I personally haven't had any issues since we castrated the male cat. The female cat often thinks he's dirty though and cleans him.

Hey- Dogs are no better.... I've had foster dogs mark my bookbags, overnight bags and my purse.... It's why I no longer leave any sort of bag on the floor for prolonged periods of time....

When I was in middle school, one of my dogs used to leave things in my backpack for me--aka bones, toys. It was hilarious. I would get to school and find either tasty snack or something to keep me occupied during class

IMO Ogio makes the best backpacks out there. Very study, feel great on the back and shoulders, and there are so many options that you can't go wrong with them. I currently use the Santo and I looove it. I also have their Sherlock Plaid Duffel and it's a perfect travel bag.
