Hi everybody,
in our med school the surgical rotation is only 5 weeks and the recommeded textbook for is Bailey & Love's "Short" Practice of Surgery. I have no idea how we're supposed to go through this huge book in 5 weeks. Any advice? Do any of you know of a similar yet more concise book?

Bailey and Love's is commonly used outside of the US...but you're right, its a bit much for a medical student rotation.

US students may have different requirements but a commonly recommended book is Lawrence's: http://www.amazon.com/Essentials-Ge...2211319?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185728222&sr=8-2

There is also a book for Surgical Subspecialties by the same author, if you find that you are expected to have more detailed knowledge about Plastics, Uro, etc.

Hi FMH, nice to see someone from KFU here, what a small world 🙂

I've just started my Internship, and here is what I think about that book:
It has all the special lites in surgery, so in General surgery rotations you won't need neurosurgery, ortho or uro....etc(so don't get scared by its size).
In 4th year it is too much. But you will need it in 6th year.
but if you have time read the lectures from the book and the gallbladder chapter, the appendix, and hernia don't go into details of how is the procedure of the operation is done,it isn't required even in 6th year, investigations & Treatment in 6th year.
The book has some good chapters and some difficult ones.
I recommend you to stick to the 19 notes that was written by students, ask about them and copy them + Braows (not sure about the spelling) very important clinically
if you want to be good buy surgical recall, again read the common only and keep the book for the future.

If the consultants tells you read Bailey & love, that's because they put the mcq from it.

Don't forget to look at some pictures in that book also try to barrow an Atlas from the library for the OSCE.

Don't worry much about surgery, it is the easiest subject and I hope you well get an excellent grade.
I know I wrote too much, if anything unclear>>> ask.
when you are starting the rotation?

Thanks for the input!

In 4th year I studied from lecture notes on general surgery, browse, surgical recall, general surgical anatomy and examination, and Hamilton Bailey's physical signs. I didn't open Bailey & Love at all. Tried to force myself to study the 19 notes, but with no luck. I'm not a big fan of notes and get bored quite easily reading them. At the end, the clinical exam went great, but the written not so much. A lot of the mcqs had 2 or 3 possible correct choices. I wasn't really sure which one to choose. Now, the new 4th year students ask for advice and I have no idea what to tell them.

As for 6th year, I hope the 9 week rotation will be enough to go through the recommended textbook. I'm a semester behind my 2003 batch so won't have my surgery II rotation till the 2nd semester of this upcoming school year or the 1st semester of the year after. Anyway, all the best in your internship McLaren!

the text book is enough for 6th year.
Our written exam was all new questions, but easy for those whom read the book.
