General Bankruptcy - How would this affect my chances?

So this has been lingering in the back of my mind of quite some time now. A few years ago I started taking on my mothers debts to the point that it put me in a terrible financial situation. I have consulted an attorney about filing bankruptcy, but I am hesitant on following through with the process because I am terrified of what this would mean for getting accepted into medical school. Would this impact me negatively when the adcoms run a background check?

A few MD schools do a credit check as well as a background check, but the vast majority do not. A better question would be: Once I'm accepted, will I be able to get the necessary loans to pay for my education with a bankruptcy on my record? Is there a list of schools that do credit checks? and will those schools deny me?

I recall one was in Wisconsin, but I don't recall specifics of any other.
