Every news source is saying they are trying to save his life to be a stud, however I am wondering if he will be able to mount a mare with such a fragile fetlock? And then you add the risk of the mare moving, or worse kicking. What are your thoughts??

Knowing Michael Matz, and the owners - they would be happy with him as a happy lawnmower, do you think they are going for this??

I believe that the horse still has to mount a phantom for AI collection. At least that is all I have seen done. 😳

True, but the phantom doesn't move or kick. So long as he could bear weight on two hind legs, he should be OK...? (From my incredibly small experience I agree that with horses and pigs they seem to use the phantom method, while bulls get the zap.)

In order for a TB to be registered he must be concieved by live cover (acutally have the mare and the stallion physically breed).

There may be sitpulations about injuries that I'm not aware of, but in general it has to be a live cover event.

I wasn't considering the TB matter just AI in general.

no - there are no stipulations for injuries in TB breeding - it must be natural service.

That's right. The Jockey Club (which regulates TB registration in North America) only allows AI if it is performed in conjunction with a live cover (the stallion must mount the mare. Introduce the penis and ejaculate into the mare).

Yes it would have to be live cover - I know there was a horse who had a number of surgeries on his hock and went on to do rather well in the breeding shed - but a fused hock is another kettle of fish.

All thoroughbreds must be conceived via live cover to be registered from the jockey club. It is possible to collect a stud with chemical and manual stimulation and an av but it would be silly in Barbaro's case as all you would end up with would be a nicely bred riding horse.

If he isn't breeding sound, providing that he makes it out of the woods first, Im sure the Kentucky Horse Park would love to have him in their Hall of Champions as Cigar and, especially, John Henry are getting up there in years! 🙂 I don't think the Jacksons will have any trouble finding a place for him if he isnt breeding sound.
