Hey guys.. just got accepted to Barry University. Can someone let me know as much as possible about the program at Barry? I want to know every little thing, from bottom to top.
ALso, on their website, it says that they are only accredited through 2007. what does that mean for me, since I'm just going to start in 2007?

first of all, congratulations on your acceptance. With regards to the accredation, schools of podiatric medicine get accredited by the council on podiatric medical education (CPME) on an annual or biannual basis.

Now, I don't go to barry university - however, I would think that you shold've done that research before going to their interview? At any rate, your safest bet is always going back to the source - i.e. the current students there and the school - don't be shy about asking all questions - i.e. residency placements, board scores, etc. because this is your future investment after all...

Unfortunately, I was a little pressed for time to do in-depth research on the school before the interview. I just want to know if someone on this site knows something I dont.. I'm just trying to pool the Barry info together to decide.
So are you saying that they will be accredited for my year as well? Did it ever happen that a school didn't get accredited?

i wouldn't worry so much on the school not getting accredited. Barry has been around long enough and like i said, all schools get accredations on either an annual or biannual basis - If I were in your shoes, I would call up Barry and ask them if they ever had a problem with accredation - which I doubt they would - but nonethless, it can't hurt.

As for doing some in-depth research, it wouldn't hurt to check with the school administrators and ask them those questions directly - i.e. residency rate, types of residencies matched, board pass rates parts I and II - etc.

I know that Podiatrist don't take the USMLE but what board exams do Podiatrist take? That exam covers all of the basic sciences you take in Podiatric school right or am I just off?

We take the National Boards of Podiatric Medicine Examination (NBPME). Part I is comparable to USMLE step I as it also covers the basic sciences, in addition to a slightly increased emphasis on lower anatomy. As a matter of fact, Myself and a number of my classmates and colleagues studied through the USMLE step I reviews. NPBPE part II then covers our clinical years and i believe is taken during our 4th year.

If you graduate from Barry with a DPM degree you can apply for any residency across the country - including NY. However, I can't say with full assurance that this applies to every residency program out there.

My appologies, I'm saying that I can't speak on behalf of all the residency programs - however, the general rule of thumb is that you are eligible to apply to any podiatric residency as long as you meet the program's criterias (LOR's, board pass, GPA, research/publications, etc.)

The quality of your education is far more valuable than the scholarship money. Take my advise on that that one. Make sure you select the school that you feel would provide you with the best opporunity to be prepared for residency - I don't know a whole lot about barry but I recommend that you look into the stats of their graduates - i.e. board pass rate? Residencies matched? At the same time, you need to ask yourself and decide if this is a place you can see yourself learning and excelling.

For that I recommend you to visit more than one school - just so you can have a basis of comparison...

and best of luck with your selection - either way you're choosing an excellent profession.
