Hey Everyone,

I decided to go to Barry University for the Masters program in Biological sciences (pre-dental) and I am starting the Program in the Spring (Jan 13) and I was wondering if anyone else was starting in Jan that is willing to get an apartment with me? (I am a female by the way :]) or if anyone has any suggestions about where to live or anything else about the school (professors, classes, etc) Thank you!! 🙂

I am applying now for fall 2010 though. Which track are you doing? The 1 year or 18 month?

Thank you! Well when I was applying for Spring 2010 I didnt realize that they dont start the one year program in the spring (only the 18 month). I was applying with the intentions of doing the 1 year but Dr. Lauden told me that i would have to start in the fall, so I decided that I would do the 18 month program. Goodluck!! Hey BLAMB, I read that you're going to get your masters at Barry University in the spring (CONGRATS) and had a few questions if you don't mind 🙂
1. I found that 2.75 is the gpa required for the 18mo/2yr program. Do you know how strict they are with that? (I have a 2.69 gpa)
2. Are you a resident of Florida? (I'm a California resident)
3. What options were given in tuition payment methods? (student loans, on campus work, etc.)

I'll appreciate any bit of info. I'm hoping to get a masters somewhere as well. Anyhow, congrats again and thanks!

heh wow blamb, im in the exact same position as you...just got accepted to the 2yr program for spring, but am wondering if i should just wait it out for the 1yr starting in the fall. im from CA and need to go check out the campus. have you been down there yet? what did you think, cause ive heard some widely varying thing about the quality of the campus/classes.

any way, congrats on getting in. maybe ill see you there lol

Hey Winningtime, I am actually not too sure how strict they are I think my GPA is around 3.0. I would call them and ask them about how strict they are, but I am sure they can make exceptions what is you DAT like? I had an 18 DAT (which ill be retaking)...Im sure you have a good shot at their 2 year program :] I am a CA resident too!! I know the people in the program are from all over the US so they dont particularly favor FL residents. I am still waiting on the tuition information, I guess I should be receiving a packet soon. Ill let you know as soon as I know!

Hey st3go I just made a post on the other Barry thread, but congrats!! well from what I understand I can finish the program in a year if I choose to do take summer school. I didnt realize the one year starts in the fall, and I really dont want to wait another half a year. I am visiting the campus at the end of this month!! Ill let you know how that goes!! I heard the area around campus isnt so great but 5 min away from campus they have nice apartments, which I will also be looking at while Im down there. Hope to see you in the program lol

hey ppl, I am also a predent from California. (Female) I am looking into the program as well. How competetive is it? I also want to start in the spring. How long is the application process and how long does it take them to respond. If I start in spring I will also be needing a place to live. Maybe we can work something out... If any one could help me with any of my questions, I would really apperciate that. thanks

Hi calident09!! In Jan they only offer the 18 month program if you have an 18 DAT and 3.0 you should have no problem getting into the school :] i think the 18 month will allow 2.7 and 16 DAT? I dont even think its late too late to apply but do it ASAP! they need official DAT, your trasncripts, and a couple letters of rec. They responded within 3 days after my application was complete! I am going to Miami tonight to look for apartments and still lookign for a roomate :]

Thanks for the response blamb, I might need a room mate if I get accepted. I will apply this week and let you know as soon as I know. quick question: when I spoke on the phone with them today they said I could turn the same letter of rec as I did to adssas. And I am not sure about my essay. Did you turn in the same letters of rec and how strong was your essay. My writing is my weakest point. And I also want to complete the program in a year instead of 2 years is that possible via summer classes. Thanks for your time. 🙂

I just google and found alot of places that offer a SMD, but most of them base in on medical student, few that actually have it for dents. here is another link to sdn forum that goes into somewhat detail on them so don't limit yourself to these but these would be a good start. Good luck

I actually just came back from Miami! I visited the campus and looked at a few apartments in different areas. I hope you get in because I am still looking for a roomie :]. Well here is what I found out about the program..for the 18 month we need to take summer school (both sessions) in order to graduate on time. The 1 year take summer as well..so the only difference is an extra spring semester. During the semester they take 14 and 16 units we take about 10 (so 3 classes versus 4) I am actually glad that I am doing the 18 month because I think that will be difficult enough!! I think its more important to get a good GPA in the end! As far as the letters of rec I turned in the same letters. The essay, I think mine was Ok honestly I kept it short and straight to the point, basically why I want to be in this program and my interest in dentistry (maybe 3 paragraphs). I am not a great writer myself, just make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes :] Apartments are really NICE especially in aventura but they are pricey..you are looking at 1 bedroom/1 bath for 1,000. The one I liked actually has a lot of Barry and FIU students living there, which is a plus! Anyways if you have any other questions feel free to ask me!!🙂

Oh and the price is the same for (1 year 18 month, 2 year) you pay per unit! So we would be applying june 2010 and they will have our first semester grades and our summer! We complete the program in 2011 and matriculate to dental school that fall, hopefully. I also met a few of their podiatry students and they seem to love the program there! too bad they don't have a dental school. My advisor and a few other professors told me that a good number of their students get into NOVA and they have a new NOVA professor on staff this year.

i actually asked them that when I went to visit and was told that they are still receiving applications right now..your chances are probably slimmer but I would still apply :]

thanx for the info...
another question: in ur opinion, what do u think of barry's reputation in relation to i guess the bigger universities that offer post-baccs (like temple, vcu, boston...). Im still a bit skeptical and do not want to invest a massive amount of money and time if this program won't be as great of a benefit as other programs...
I did speak to the admissions committee members or the advisors at some of the dental schools I applied to and some of them had absolutely no idea who or what Barry is...

thanks for the update blamb. Im planning on going down there in a couple weeks to visit, but was wondering if you talked to any of the other MBS students about the program. Other than that how was the campus? and is it hard to get there from the airport lol

I honestly dont know much about the other post bacc programs. I did look into temple but based on their requirements you might as well apply to their dental school. I felt my Gpa of 3.0 was not competitive enough so I didnt bother appying! Well I know Nova and Tufts know about the program. I say if you can get into a post bac that has a link then go for it! But those programs are really competitive and start in the fall. I didnt want to sit around for half a year and wanted to start a program in Jan. :]

I didnt see any BMs students! I was hoping I would but my tour was around 3 and most of the student were in class. To be honest the campus isnt all that great and is in a bad area. I guess i expected more because I went to a private undergrad in Cali and it was much nicer. It just looks very old to me, but the science building where we take our classes is much nicer than the rest of the campus which Im happy
about :]. I flew in to tampa and it was only a 10 min drive.

As an FYI for anyone interested in applying for the fall 2010 1 year program, I called them and was told they don't really start looking at applications for that until March or so. I was encouraged to apply early anyway, but I am going to wait until January and my new DAT scores 🙂.

i went on the ada. org website (where we registered for the DAT)and step 5 says score reports and sent it from there!!

I got a letter from barry university stating the stuff they still need from me. They still need soo much stuff from me. They asked for a copy of my resume also. Did they ask you for that?

thnx for the reply.... i submitted my application and mailed out most of the supplementary items they require!!!
just a bit confused tho, their website says that they require a personal statement! now, is that the same thing as the 3 essay/short answer type questions they had on the application or do i have to submit a separate personal statement stating my reasons for admission to their school??? i know the deadline is approaching fast so i kinda want to get all of these things out of the way...
