Hello! I'm planning on going to Barry University for the 18 month BMS program starting in Jan. 2009. Can anyone tell me if classes are during the day or in the evenings? Would it be possible to work a part time job?

Thx!

Are you talking about Barry U in Florida? I was down there earlier this year. I applied to their early acceptance program with SGU SOM and was accepted but I decided to stay here and try for the good ol' US first.

At any rate....

The class schedule at BU was almost exclusively during the day. They had some night classes but few if any were applicable to your major. The program goes quick not so much because the course load is drastically deep in credits taken at a time but because there are no breaks (as in school just goes on and on and on and on like the real world....).

You could prob swing a job. BUT, remember to keep your grades high!

Best of luck,

hey! i've been accepted for the january 09 semester as well. does that mean i'm in the 18 month program? i was told they only accept 25 people into their jan term. has anyone visited the campus yet? or any recommendations about housing close by? thanks! 🙂

I was also accepted to Barry BMS for Spring 09, but I still have not decided if I will attend.
I am worried schools outside Fl will not even know about Barry University. I also heard the 77% success rate in getting people into med school includes DO, Vet school, Dental, and Caribbean.
Anyone else undecided?

Well, that certainly applies to me. I'm from NY and I never heard of them before now.

Regarding whether to do this BMS program, I think it really depends on the particular schools you want to apply to afterwards. If I were you, I would call the admissions people at these schools and ask if they would consider a BMS degree from Barry to be strong evidence of an applicant's ability to handle med school work. If they say no, don't do it.

Based on what I've read on SDN, the most effective grad programs for getting you into med school are not BMS programs but SMPs (the kind where you do the first-year med school curriculum as a "dry run"). If you do well in an SMP (close to 4.0), that can get you into med school despite a low undergrad GPA, but the catch is that if your grades are even middling (3.5 or below), most med schools will shun you, even Caribbean and DO schools. So you have to be confident that you'll do well in an SMP before enrolling in one.

P.S. I noticed in OneTyme's post that Barry has an "early acceptance program with SGU," i.e. St. George's in the Caribbean. Why would you do a master's program to get into a Caribbean med school? (I thought the hard part wasn't getting into those schools, but graduating and getting a US residency.) If you're going to put in the work to do a BMS program, why not shoot for allo or DO school in the US? You'd be much better off in any US school than in a Caribbean school
