Bartending=Manual Dexterity?

Hi guys,

Wanted to ask a couple of quick questions since i value a lot of your opinions. I am working on my app right now, and i have gottne to the part regarding manual dexterity. I am currently enrolled in a ceramics class so that i can excel with the "manaul dexterity" when i become a dentist.

However, I have also bartended during my entire college career, which has greatly helped me pay for school. My question is, do you think bartending also demonstrates some manual dexterity?

My concern is that i know bartending is also not regarded as a great "pre dentistry" job, so i wonder if putting that on my aplpication would hurt me more than it helped.

Any adivce here would be greatly appreciateds guys.

I don't think adcomms really care what previous jobs you've had. (aside from maybe prostitution and drug dealing 🙂 ) Put it on the app where it's asked for and don't worry about it.

But I probably wouldn't stress it as an indicator of manual dexterity. Bartending doesn't really require a lot of fine motor skill and trying to suggest that it does kind of makes you like desperate (no offense here, I realize we all feel desperate before we have an acceptance in hand 🙂 ) If I mentioned it at all, I would talk about something along the lines of how I met a lot of people and learned how to deal with different personalities.

OF COURSE! Put it down on your AADSAS! Anything that has to do with your hands and coordination, put in on your application. I, too, bartended in undergrad and I put bartending down as one of the "manual dexterity" abilities.

Throwing/catching bottles, pouring a Long Island with four bottles in one hand, and flipping shot glasses and catching them, I definitely feel that controlling slippery glass bottles and glasses is a trait of manual dexterity!

Remember, anything that has to do with your hands counts (keep it clean guys)!

Yeah, pooring, tossing and catching glasses, bottles are great. Who can do it but bartenders, anyway? Put every thing you have done on. Don't hold back.

I wrote almost a page for every single answer in the back of that aadsas application. Explain in great details what was going on with your life.

And do not worry about repetitious.

jmac, right now is not a good time to hide the little light that makes you shine above the rest. On the surface, bartending has a negative association with the most abused drug in Western society. But in your AADSAS, bartending will not only represent excellent hand-eye coordination, it will also speak volumes about your ability to communicate with all types of people & it will also show self-discipline. Also, think about the responsibility a bartender must carry. You had to gauge when someone needed a ride home, had enough Kristal, or was born after 1985(just when Michael began bleaching the melanin). Your skills as a bartender probably saved a life or two. You not only own the rights to claiming manual dexterity, you can claim good social graces, perserverance, responsiblity, & street smarts. Keep in mind these are things school cant teach you & goes unoticed in your GPA. Also, bartending greatly enhanced your knowledge of chemistry. "Dear AADSAS, after my 4th Adios MF, I realized that ice melts due to the kinetic energy of the molecules in solution being transferred (upon collision) to the crystallized water molecules that ice is composed of."
