I was wondering pediatrics and geriatrics are the same as a general internist but just specializing on one age group. Also, I was wondering if opthamology was a selective profession. Are there a lot of opthamologists and is it an in-demand career?

Thanks🙂

Pediatrics focuses on kids, but you could sub-specialize in pediatrics too. Like you could be a pediatrics cardiologist or peds critical care, etc.

Optho is in very high demand is one of the hardest specialities to match into.

I think geriatrics is a subspecialty of internal medicine while general pediatrics is a separate specialty. Ophthalmology is considered one of the ROAD specialties which are characterized by easier hours with high pay, so it should be very competitive.

This site will let you research specialty (residency) and sub-specialty (fellowship) opportunities.

pediatrics is a residency from which you can sub specialize into peds cardiology, peds *edited* NOT SURGERY, peds emergency medicine, peds infectious diseases, etc. Geriatrics is a fellowship following a residency in either internal medicine or family practice.

Ophthalmology is a highly competitive specialty. As another poster said, it is one of the ROAD specialties which have high pay and good hours. (radiology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, and dermatology)

Boy, a lot of folks would like that if it were true. To become a pediatric surgeon you have to do a surgical residency (5 years) and then a pediatric surgical fellowship (2 years). If you don't have a PhD or the like, you usually need to do an additional 2 years research in there somewhere. It would be a lot easier if you could just skip all that surgical residency stuff and go right on to the good pedi part. Of course, you wouldn't likely be a very good pedi surgeon, but that's a detail.🙂 It is true that to for pediatric MEDICAL specialties (including pedi cards), you do three years of pediatric residency followed by three years of fellowship.

Also, I'm not a spelling nut, but can we try to get that h back into ophthalmology on this thread on all the posts!

Not trying to say you did it but I found it odd how when you quoted organdonor the h's he put magically disappeared. He wrote it as ophthalmology, but when you quoted him it appeared as opthalmology.

Nope that was me lol I fixed it after he pointed it out.

Pedi Cards is a really interesting field but I have no interest in surgery. I'd be happy exploring that career field but I'm not sure how much demand there is for that.

Pediatric cardiology is a large and thriving specialty. There are far more pediatric cardiologists than pediatric cardiovascular surgeons. But, you can wait a while as one doesn't decide on a fellowship in pediatric cardiology until the second year of pediatric residency.
