Hi, everybody
Maybe I am only one that unofficially rejected from Baylor. My stat is ok: 19/20 /15 with GPA 3.37 for Science and overall. My PAT is low but you must know Baylor doesn’t care about PAT. Just I applied for TEXAS schools and already I got my interview in SA Dec 3rd. But nothing heard from Houston. Baylor was my first choice because I live in DFW area I already had an unofficial interview with Baylor back April and it seemed they were interested to me. The interview went very good so even I didn’t expect official interview from them. (It is funny unofficial interview and unofficial rejection! 😳)
After having interview in SA I realized SA dental school is more fit with me, I really impressed comparing to Baylor. Anyway I called to Baylor to find out what’s going on.
The answer was so direct! “You don’t have upper level courses in your record” and it is true I don’t have any upper level courses. I took all my pr-requirements in CC because I couldn’t afford going to four years university! (I am not qualified for any loan or grant or... because I already have bachelor in physical therapy from overseas and I work over 60 hours a week average).
Baylor really cares about upper level science courses, for this reason you see people with lower DAT accepted! Anyway it is their policy for admission and what it is.
I had my interview in SA. But you guys know it means nothing. And I am already in my plan B: studying hard and retaking DAT and for sure I am not going to make same mistake I have done for this circle. Apply for states schools, and at least 15 out of state! And taking 2 or 3 upper level courses (I am taking Biochemistry next semester).
I think this year is too late for applying for out of state schools.
Just I wanted to share my experience with you guys and good luck for everybody. any add to this thread will be useful for all of us.

I took 1 upper level science course already and am taking Biochemistry right now. My stats aren't bad either. GPA is pretty fair too. Even so, Baylor didn't even invite me for an interview. I think they are just really picky.

I don't get what an unofficial interview and an unofficial rejection is. Can you tell me what you mean by that?

Dear 100dental,
unofficial interview means I got an interview last April in imppersion Day. It was one long day for pre dental students. it is exactly like official interview. almost 40 to 50 students. from this numbers they chose 10-12 students and we got real interview with admission guys then they returned the interviw sheets to us that we know what are our weak and srong points. but they kept mine. this was unofficial interview! about unofficial rejection: I called them and asked about my status. they told me, they are not interested to me and there is noway I get accepted in Baylor. 😎

I was told the same thing when I called to check on my app. They told me that without the upper level sciences they would just "table" my application until I had the classes. In other words put my app in the trash... ha!

In addtion, I was told I would need a current DAT score even though ADA says the DAT is good for a few years.

Baylor is BIG on upper division sciences. I had lower DAT scores, and a lot of upper division bio's. I think having these classes (ie. neuro, anatomy, physiology) is what got me in. I also had research which I'm sure also helped, but I don't know if this was a huge plus.

when i talked to the Baylor admission, they told me they want to see 3000 and 4000 courses in students transcript. that means if i take Genetic in CC, is still counting as a lower division class. my sugestion is people are not BIO or CHEM major try to take even very basic prereuirments in 4 years school( at least 3 or 4 of them). anyway I think i am going to miss 2008 because just i got interview from San Antonio and I have not applied out of states. i am alittle upset but that is ok. I still have 2009 🙂 and buckling up for retaking DAT and taking some upper division courses.
Good luck for everybody 👍

I really don't think it hurts to take the basics at the CC (community college) level. I scored OK on my DAT science scores with my basics from CC and without the higher level sciences from a four year... I think the schools fail to realize people that don't have the science background bring other experiences to the table that a Science major wouldn't have... of course the dental schools don't seem to care if you fail at the business/life side of things once you are out... they have enough to worry about with trying to cram you full of the knowledge in 4 years.

Anyway, as stated in the above thread, and from Baylor admissions, they are looking for 3000/4000 level classes, and current DAT scores at 18 or above.

I don't know that that is necessarily the case. We have plenty of non-science majors in my class (business, engineering, psychology, etc), we have students who are making career changes, and someone who used to be in med school.

Dear toothfairy
We are talking about Baylor and their admssion policy, other Schools like SA they weight proprately and consider all compnenets. for example in SA i was only one in my badge showing comunity collage! Don't go wrong I have my Bachelore in Physical Therapy from overseas, that program included lots of A&P, Histology, and..... in Anatomy even more than Medical Students!
When I told To Baylor Admission about my degree, they responded: they don't care!!😕 that is ok
honestly I think SA is much more fit with me than Baylor. In San Antonio I felt really Academic Atmospher but in Baylor I didn't have that experience, regardless of what happenes for sure I prefer SA to Dallas. thats me 👍

Not to be mean or anything but considering the fierceness of the competition in texas, your gpa will probably not make you stand out...what other things have you done? community service? shadowing? extra-curricular activities? Baylor and SA's academics are quite on par with one another, the methodology of how the info. is transmitted is different. At my baylor interview, they did tell me to take some more upper level science classes especially if you are not a hard science major. The reasoning is exposure to this material will make it easier during dental school and will show them you can handle the science coursework. If they won't accept your foreign degree, you should see if a 4 yr school will transfer some credits over etc. (I'm not sure how foreign degrees are handled).

In general having degree from overseas counting as a degree! but they don't consider in GPA calculation and they don't look at details . you are right, having upper level courses will help you in Dental school, and each school has its own policy. as other post by toothfairy85 you must see which school is more fit with you, that is not meaning school X better than school Y. it means what you like, I like San Antonio because the location of Dental School and its repitution in researching programs. and just remeber when you graduate it is not really matter where you have been in your Dental program!
