Is Baylor University and Baylor Medical School related? I know ones in Houston and ones in Waco and I was wondering if they were apart of each others programs... Does anybody know anything about Texas undergrad schools and which schools are the best for allo-schools or osteo-schools med schools? What are the best overall undergrad schools in texas for medschools? And also... does anybody know anything about transfering from one undergrad school to another? Does that effect anything when medschools look at you as an overall candidate? Do people go to smaller colleges then transfer all the time for GPA purposes and so-forth... Is that a common thing to do? Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks

Hi nrut88,

No Baylor University (Waco, TX) and Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX) are not affiliated at all.

As for best med schools, you'll get a great education at any of the institutions, but BCM and UT Southwestern are generally considered the most competitive allopathic schools in Texas.

As for undergrad, you can go to pretty much any school (Rice, the UT's, Trinity, A&M, etc.) and get into a med school. Of course, if you want a real top-tier school it benefits you to go to a more well-known undergrad like the ones I mentioned.

Transferring shouldn't be a big deal. I know someone who transferred from Rice to UT Austin for GPA purposes got into a Texas med school. Same with someone who transferred the opposite way. But I would say just stick with one school, it's less hassle.

Whatever you do NOT go to SMU. It's probably the biggest mistake of my life. The top 5 colleges for med school acceptance in TX are UT Austin, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor University, and University of Houston, according to Texas Tech Med. If you're a high school senior and you want to go to Baylor Med, you can apply for early assurance to Baylor med through Baylor U or Rice. You can go to UTSA through St. Mary's U and to Texas Tech med through Austin College. Also check out the JAMP program to go to any TX med school.

That's probably the top 5 colleges for acceptance to Texas Tech and not other TX schools.

To the OP: go to a school where you feel most comfortable and that fits your needs. If you do well, I'm sure you will be admitted to med schoo. Good luck.

In terms of ranking, I'm pretty sure Rice is the only top 20-type school for undergrad in Texas (if anyone actually pays attention to those rank lists or whatever). Rice is a small school (like 20 times smaller than UT-Austin), so in terms of sheer numbers we don't send as many to the Texas med schools, but the percentage getting in is high.
And I had a great time there, so I'm biased 😳

A&M is an awesome undergrad institution for doing your premedical studies. Our advising office at A&M is arguably one of the best in the nation and the timelines they have given us have been really, really helpful. That might not sound very important, but trust me, it is. My premed advisor read my whole application (AMCAS and TMDSAS), corrected all the little mistakes, and made sure I presented myself as best as I could to Texas med schools. I did a surgery program this past summer at Baylor and some of the people in my program from more "prestigious" schools from around the country told me most premeds at their university get the bulk of their advising from their upperclassmen, which is really scary! Just to give you an idea of A&M's annual success, we send 20-30 people to UTSW and 10-15 people to Baylor each year. Gig'em Aggies!

1. BU & BCM became seperate institutions in the 60's, but were affiliated prior to that time.

2. The best pre-medical schools in Texas are: (in order)
Baylor, Rice, Texas, Texas Tech, & Texas A&M

Dude, do you even know what you're talking about? Texas A&M is not even on your list? A&M is traditionally the TOP feeder school to Texas medical schools, UT-Austin a close second. I will give you Rice and Baylor - they're good schools but send far less to medical school numbers-wise. But Tech??

Another interesting note is that the Baylor College of Dentistry is affiliated with the Texas A&M University System. Confused yet?

I'll add A&M, but it will be at the end of the list. I wouldn't pick A&M over any of those schools, unless I wanted to be an engineer or I owned overalls.

lol, this is going to quickly degenerate into a flame war btw. the texas schools. But I would like to mention that you can't judge things based on the absolute *number* of pre-meds (or something like we sent X number of people to UTSW) because the sizes of the schools are very different. Texas A&M & UT are above 30K students, Rice has less than 3K.

Exactly. Baylor & Rice have the highest percentage accepted.

So what - is UTSA competitive now? Man I got into UTSA with a 2.6 gpa and a 1200 on my SATs. They said to our freshman class that they have like a 99% acceptance rate

I believe you are confusing the reference to UTHSC-SA abbreviated with the intials UTSA with the undergraduate institution of the same name.

🙄 Whatever. Some of these schools don't even PUBLISH this information, so there is no way you could know or rank the schools based on the percentage of pre-meds accepted.

Honestly, I never really thought of "pre-med" being a program. To me it's been an individual effort. As long as YOU make high grades, score well enough on the MCAT (any of the previously mentioned schools will prepare you well with background material), and do some extracurriculars showing you have an interest in serving others, you WILL get into medical school. Don't worry too much about undergrad pre-med programs.

Ok, which schools?

Agreed, but any list of Texas undergrad schools that would be "good to go to" should include Texas A&M, with one of the best (nationally recognized) pre-med advising offices, and an unparalleled basic science curriculum (due to the vet school at Texas A&M). I think that when you arbitrarily try to "rank" schools you run into problems though.

I also agree with the poster that suggested that pre-med is more of an individual effort, but institutional respect and support go a LONG way to make each individual's job easier.

Good luck to you all, and OSUDoc, stick to ranking the Oklahoma schools

I wouldn't know anything about Oklahoma undergraduate schools, but Texas A&M is just about the same.

To the OP...BCM in Houston and BU in Waco are separate. They used to be together back in the day when the medical school was in Dallas and BU in Waco still had control over it. The medical school wanted to move somewhere or wanted something that the undergrad would not let it....it basically ended in BCM moving from Dallas to Houston and breaking ties with the undergrad (except for its name). Now, BCM is a separate entity and its only affiliation with BU is name only....there is still parts in Dallas that are affiliated with the undergrad and some with the medical school (I know for a fact that the nursing school is affiliated with the undergrad considering the nursing students spend their last 2 years of undergrad in Dallas...aside from that...i dont know).

As for the debate of which is the best pre-med schools...i'd rank them like this (no particular order): Baylor, UT-Austin, A&M, Rice, Tech, UTSA...there are probably more, but my mind isn't working to think too hard tonight.

Undergrad does matter - not in regards to which has a bigger name, but which school is well-versed in the med school process and is willing to provide their students every opportunity to excel as premeds and become med students. I know, because I go to a terrible school for premeds and had to take half my pre-reqs at a much better undergrad just down the highway. My sister goes to Baylor and that school loves its premeds and prepares them very well. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gone to Baylor or UT Austin.
