Hello,

I'm a senior in high school, committed to Baylor. I am trying to decide between doing University Scholars or going the regular path with a Molecular & Cell Bio major or Biochem major.

The University Scholars program waives my General Ed courses (of which there are MANY at Baylor), allowing me to concentrate in my areas of interest, which are Bio/Biochem, Linguistics, and Medical Humanities. Here is a link to the USchol program: About UNSC

However, the issue is that my major IS University Scholars, which I will get a BA for. Though the program itself is wonderful, I was wondering what medical schools would think of this. I will have all my medical school requirements done, but is having a BA in an unknown major going to work against me? Additionally, do you think potential employers will care about this (in case I need to take a gap year and work)? On my diploma, I will receive my degree for USchol, but I will very likely have a secondary major listed on my transcript as Bio/Biochem(whichever I decide on) and a minor in Linguistics.
The pre-health committee will write me a letter which tells medical schools that I was in the top 2% of the school, what my concentrations were, how I contributed on campus - overall a much more in depth letter and recommendation than for other students. Additionally, I think it'll open up a lot of doors on campus because I am in the top percentage of the school. I'm just trying to weigh if these opportunities are worth the uncertainty.

If anyone has thoughts, please let me know! I love the program and I think I would do well, I'm just worried about outcomes and whether it'll end up being worth it.

One more thing - if anyone has thoughts, whether positive or negative, about Baylor's pre-med program, I would love to know. Having some extra information would be great 🙂
Thanks in advance.

If you are double majoring in bio or biochem anyways, then it won't matter. If you are going to try to find a job as an EMT, MA or tech, the major doesn't matter either.
