yes only if your black. You will probably get in to Meharry and Howard but nowhere else.

DonutEater, this is not a personal bash but:

Its so funny to me how EVERYBODY talks so bad about Howard and Meharry but they constantly produce dentist every year. Steady passing the same boards that Harvard dental students do and still get talked about year in and year out...Just sad, why hate?😕 I would love to get into these schools, make a difference and bring them great grades and build their reputation up. If you wanna shut em down so bad get a job on the ADA board and do so but till then...STOP HATING please:laugh: That is all...

Some hard workers who have 3.5+ gpa and 20+ DAT get rejected many places because there is just so many of these guys with his/her race and not enough seats in dental schools. It's unfair that URM's get in with ~2.6gpa and 15AA just cause they are black. It's not like I can choose to be white. I would rather wanted to be black if they get so many benefits as this.

+1 👍

i would LOVE to go to howard. it's one of my top choices (no, i'm not URM). the people are really friendly 🙂 the students i've talked to from there told me that the school likes people who really show interest in them and have life experiences, not necessarily those with high stats, although that is also important to them!

Dude, stop acting as if Howard/Meharry are on par w/ Harvard.   And stop acting as if you don't get any benefit from being black...b/c you do...end of story. You can pretty much get into places w/ lower stats b/c of the way you look. And I can tell you don't like being called out on it b/c you know it's true, right?

African Americans in poverty stricken areas still largely experience extreme struggles throughout their childhood and on into college. If you don't believe me then you have never gotten off the wrong exit on the freeway. These students in my opinion deserve to have a place held for them if they overcome insurmountable odds and graduate an inner city public school and college. None of us can possibly understand what it is like to grow up in a household on welfare unless we have lived it first hand. I do not how ever feel any standards should be lowered for any URM such as an African American who grew up in a middle class suburban household. That would be wrong and unfair.

But who do you think the benefits are going towards?

Thank you biorenaissance, coulnt have said that any better...Half of these 3.5 GPA's dont have ANY responsibility whatsoever...I dont go to my dorm and go to bed after a hard test like most of my classmates, I go to work two jobs and pay bills to make sure I have a place to sleep...Maybe if I was babied in college I would have a GREAT GPA..

Yes, I will kill myself because this stranger told me to through internet.
That is the dumbest **** I've ever seen in my life. Try taking off your fingers off of the keyboard and reach for those books and try raising your gpa.

Read the part in bold: you might change your mind about the dumbest crap you've ever read.

I see both sides of the arguement here. Everyone has problems (black, purple, white, yellow, etc...) so why can't we all just work together and not make excuses. My father sold crack for a living, has been (STILL IS) in jail my whole life, and I could keep going. I am white, so yes, this happens to "white people" as well. I have worked my ass off to get to where I am today (two jobs + studying until I fall asleep every single night) and I feel like if I use this "disadvantaged status" I would sell myself short. If I can't get to my dreams by pure dedication and work, maybe God didn't intend on me doing it. I am so sick of people (white and black) throwing race around and stirring the fire up. I mean really people, we are all humans and no one should have advantages/disadvantages over another person based solely on race. That's completely ridiculous. Who wants something if it is just handed to them? That's where the country is headed now people...everyone wants a handout. Our president (I already know I'm about to get called a racist myself, but oh well) is making it so that unless you're a URM it will be extremely difficult for you to get into dental school. I am all for equality and always have been. If a black man is sitting next to me (this is too long I know lol) and he has better STATS than I do, I am all for him getting what would have been my seat. Not all white people (----> whoever that was that said something about us not working) are spoiled like that. I guess though, if we wanted to sit here and make excuses and make others have pity fits over us, we could be here all night. Suck it up people, and good luck to everyone applying (even blacks lol).

They don't need luck. They just need to apply and pay fees to Meharry and Howard and they are in.

I have many opinions on this topic, but I just want to point out that it isn't only pre-dents and pre-meds that know about the score skews, it's (potential, but probably not) patients as well. Would you give the charity of your well being to a less than qualified doctor because of their race? no. Do I think this is the case? No, because of boards, etc. which ensure a minimal level of education... still, it's a Double edged sword.

seriously guys...!?!? you all want to be respectable professionals... yet you are bashing each other over the internet about an issue that you really have no control over... quite pointless I'd say... It's not fair to generalize groups and point fingers... everyone is working hard to get where they want to be... you can't justify why black people get in etc... that is ridiculous...and yes minimum education standards are being met... GPA is not everything... sometimes it isn't even a good indicator of academic ability and definately not a good indicator of who will make a good dentist or not... stop hating on each other through an internet forum and focus on yourselves... putting others down doesn't get you anywhere... and only implies insecurity... complaining and whining doesn't get you any further.

let me just say this ok according to 2k9 adea book official guide to d schools

50% off apps are white(~5800)(~2900 get in)
5.3 % apps are black(~600-700) out of it only (~500 ) get in

as we can all acknowledge, ignoring URM we can say that there must be atleast ~500 whites with same or low stats than blacks obviously get in... not all 3k whites have over 25... & not all blacks have 17's or 15's get real there are some 20+ just like everyone else

I am not saying anything these are just facts. + we are living in America country of diversity and equal opportunity... remember that... so if you want to find all white school or something along the lines well tough luck there aren't any...

Now dont go bashing meharry and howard... no one is complaining over 10+ university accepting over 60%+ of whites...

I can appreciate that URMs have had a harder life (or lyfe :meanie:) and I understand why subpar students are allowed to get into schools like Meharry or Howard. But it's a bit disconcerting when kids who got 2.x get in and others who had 3.x don't. It's like the sacrifice and commitment that the better achieving students put in was all for nothing (alongside with a better understanding of the concepts).

When I hear something like
MLKizangsta said:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
...I feel like the URMs are being judged by their color of their skin and not for the content of their character, which is reflected in how motivated students are to get good grades.

Look everyone, I probably was out of line for putting up this thread...I wasnt trying to start nothing but I just thought it was amazing that that guy got in with those scores. I myself dont have EXCELLENT grades and was happy when I saw this because in my mind I have a chance to get in period. I dont have ANY college grads in my ENTIRE family period and becoming anything greater than a high school graduate is truly a blessing to me no matter what school you attend or attended. Im really tired of the "BLACK VS. WHITE", "URM VS NON URM", whatever stuff its really not that deep guys..I will say that I do get heated when people bash Meharry and Howard but I guess I just need to suck it up and accept that this is how it is and move on. Again, my bad everybody didnt mean to upset anyone or try to start an informal pre dental riot.

It is a strict truth that not all African Americans are poverty stricken.. Most of my African American friends are fairly wealthy and well off. I just wanted to point out that many Asians/Caucasians are poor as well. Heck, most of the older generation Asians in America came here with nothing in their hands, working 70 hours a week getting paid minimum wage, and setting up a liquor store/nail salon/laundromat, then working another 100 hours a week to hard earn the money for their children to thrive academically.

They all worked hard, and African Americans can definitely get up there if they worked hard enough. But why aren't they improving at par with other minorities? Even though they get extra bonus in academia?

I have always wondered why.

I just want to say that if this "bbanks" guy is real on predents.com then im in there like swim wear some where lol:laugh: That is all...

Hey stlouisboi2002, you probably had no bad intentions, and I am sorry this thread turned into such a flame war. It seems like you will be fine! I can't believe that guy's for real. Good luck.

I love being at HBCUs. It would be nice not being the only black person in the class for a change. I went to a huge state university and studied engineering and a lot of times I was the only black student in the classroom. Then in the summer I would take classes at a nearby HBCU and the environment was so different. Students helped one another and didn't compete with one another. It's a much more nuturing environment for students to grow academically and as an individual. You would really have to attend an HBCU to understand. The environment is completely different. So until you attend one you can't say anything cause you have no clue.

Students here work very hard to try to get into the dental schools and you make this thread saying how easy it appears to you because your fellow african american got into merharry and howard with ridiculously low gpa and dat. Recent posts have some students with 3.7 gpa and 23 AA getting rejected by Case. Here, you post this crap saying how you can weasle into dental school with your ridiculously low gpa and dat. Threads like the one you just made today is very insensitive especially at times like these where students who have way better stats than you are getting rejected by dental schools.

First of all highhoppe, applicants are more than just GPAs and DAT scores. Maybe the individual with a 3.6 gpa and 23 DAT had no personality or no desire to be a dentist e.i (med school reject). Whatever the situation understand that there are soo many variables and that no 2 applicants are alike or have the same life experiences. Also the goal of Meharry and Howard is to provide dentist to individuals in underserved communities. You just don't apply to these HBCU as your backup school, cause they can see through that and you can count on your rejection letter waiting for you in the mail. This goes for black, Asian, Hispanic or white applicants

ASDOH has a very similar philosophy and very dissimilar stats and class profile...

Let's be reasonable here people...A few things:

- Full disclosure: I am a black female
- Not all African Americans are "poverty stricken"
- Not all whites and asians have been "babied" or had everything handed to them on a silver platter
- There is such a thing as wealthy African Americans
- There is such a thing as a dirt poor, poverty stricken white/asian
- Overcoming insurmountable odds doesn't make somebody more qualified than another person to become a dentist or treat a patient (Example: A completely fictional character, WHITE OR BLACK, is the first in his family to go to college, grew up with minimal supervision and no father, was "poverty stricken" and avoided the pitfalls of urban childhood, yet somehow gets to college and aspires to be a dentist. Just because he overcame those odds it doesn't mean he'll be a good dentist. It merely means he persevered. He deserves a spot in dental school no more than anyone else deserves anything...he should still have to be superior to his peers, race/gender neutral).
- Question: What happens to a white male who grew up in poverty with zero advantages and a disastrous home life? There is no real way of differentiating this individual from a trust fund baby, even with "Disadvantaged" status
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: There is nothing complaining can do about it.

To the gentleman who discussed going to work 2 jobs after school as an excuse for academic performance: Do you deserve a spot in dental school more than someone else who also worked two jobs and still managed to pull exceptional grades? Plenty of people work their way through school while performing at a high level.

 you make good points until the president point..how has dental school admissions changed since President Obama came into office? I agree that URMs should aim to be competitive with everyone else. Those that have high stats (and no red flags on their app) typically do get accepted. If you're in the average pool (which most applicants seem to be in), stats are more than just your GPA/DAT scores and those other factors contribute to admissions decisions. Also, non URMs with low stats do get into Meharry and Howard.

This thread, that predents profile, and the OP's remarkes are negatively affecting my world view and my opinion of AA.
note: must return to college in the fall to be re-indoctrinated.

To the gentleman who discussed going to work 2 jobs after school as an excuse for academic performance: Do you deserve a spot in dental school more than someone else who also worked two jobs and still managed to pull exceptional grades? Plenty of people work their way through school while performing at a high level.

Amen to that, the best response ever, thank you!😀

Students here work very hard to try to get into the dental schools and you make this thread saying how easy it appears to you because your fellow african american got into merharry and howard with ridiculously low gpa and dat. Recent posts have some students with 3.7 gpa and 23 AA getting rejected by Case. Here, you post this crap saying how you can weasle into dental school with your ridiculously low gpa and dat. Threads like the one you just made today is very insensitive especially at times like these where students who have way better stats than you are getting rejected by dental schools.

Lol did you read his post that started this thread, it didn't say anything about weasling his way in with bad grades or about how easy it is to get in. He literally just saw somebody (who is also URM but thats really besides the point) with the same stats as him who got into dental school and it gave him hope to get in. If you can't handle people getting in with lower GPAs than you that's your problem.

just miserable. what i can't handle or understand is that someone gets an advantage in applying to dental school because they produce more melanin than i do. unless there is some link between melanin and intelligence i don't know about, it is a terrible criterion on which to judge people.

Hey stlouisboi2002, you probably had no bad intentions, and I am sorry this thread turned into such a flame war. It seems like you will be fine! I can't believe that guy's for real. Good luck.

I agree with you on this one. I am Asian, I came to US few years back and never spoke any English before coming here. I started working when I was 17. I worked in construction to gas station and many other low-paying jobs. I wanted to help my family. We had a house foreclosed within two years of purchase. My parents are suffering from major health problems. I wanted to do well at school, but there are times I couldn't handle the situation. I didn't even attend my undergrad graduation because my mom was in hospital that time.

Yea its rediculous.

Yet another dumb URM thread...

When is the SDN community going to understand that the URM system for dental school admissions has more to do with increasing the number dentists who will practice in underserved areas than rewarding someone because they are a certain race. Yes, the two generally go hand in hand but until the white/asian graduates start opening up practices in inner cities/border towns/rural communities, underserved areas will continue to be a problem, and URMs will continue to get in with slightly lower stats. Why? Because they are more likely to practice in areas that badly need it!

---> lovelyinpink, I will give you proof. What you believe is your own opinion I guess, but this is actually in the healthcare bill. I suggest you read it before you point out what you think are my mistakes, ok?

Page 909

""In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . Training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds."

Thanks, have a good day 🙂

I do think that a lot of people miss this point (I wasn't completely aware of it until you showed me), but I think people are primarily upset (on this thread) with the ignorance and lack of sensitivity that the OP and his supporter(s) are showing. This isn't the space to be gloating about how lesser credentials are still going to get you into school, especially when we have people with 3.8 GPAs and 23 AA getting rejected without interviews to Case Western. The nonsense justification of overcoming tough odds and excusing poor grades isn't winning anyone any sympathy.

Another thing that really bothers me with this thread is that I think it's really unfair that whites have to be worried about being branded as racists just because the disagree with our President. We had a person back up his claim with cold hard fact, yet he is worried about backlash. This is a growing trend, too. Anytime a white person makes a criticism of Barack Obama they are called a racist or a bigot, when in reality they simply have different ideologies. It's very unfair to whites.

Totally agree with all of that.

Thanks KoughDai. I'm not racist at all, but I couldn't disagree more with the policies being put in place by the current administration. Dentistry/Medicine both are unlike most other professions. They actually have people's lives at stake when they stick them with a needle (or whatever the procedure is). No one here can convince me that it is ethical for someone to be granted acceptance into any helath-related professional school (or any other school, but especially these) based on the color of their skin. Does that make me right and everyone else wrong? I just think people need to do their research and read the actual Healthcare Bill before they basically say I do not know what I am talking about. Also, even though I am a white guy, I grew up around friends that I would never label them as being "black." It's so sad to see, here in year 2010, that people (both races) use the race card to manipulate people. The idea that white dentists do not practice in "under-served" populations is completely ludicrous. The dentist that I shadowed couldn't have been in a more black-dominated area of town. I mean really, I just wish this stupid world could all live up to the same standards, love one another, and do their job. I can understand why some blacks feel hatred towards whites, but is there anything any of us can do about it? I often wish I could pull up the people who owned and started slavery and slap them in the face a couple times or three lol. So, moral of the story - everyone needs to be treated fairly. If a black individual has higher scores than I do, he deserves the spot, point blank. If we both have the exact same numbers, then we can take into play who has had to overcome what, and all of the other things. We all just need to get along and hope the best for ourselves as well as others. Have a great day everyone.
