from the working in Canada after residency in US thread below it seems BC physicians are paid more than MDs in Ontario, at least the payments from their medical services plan.

Are BC hospital privileges hard to get ,say for a GI specialist or Ophthalmologist(550 to over 2 million)?

Hospital privileges are hard to come by in Ontario esp in Toronto and GTA!

Do these medical services plan payments covers tests ordered by you (lab,Xrays etc) or just tests/procedures in your office( colonoscopy ,cataract surgery ,eye measurement OCT/HRT,pachymetry?)

thanks

For a specialist, hospital privileges are hard to get in any Canadian province. Most hospitals will only provide you with privileges if (a) they have an open position in your specialty and (b) after a competitive hiring process for that position has taken place. Physicians in procedural specialties (ie, most surgical specialties) are currently having an extremely difficult time finding a hospital with an open position - and the situation in or near large urban areas is particularly bad.

In British Columbia, as in all other Canadian provinces, the government pays the full cost for all medically necessary doctor visits, tests, and procedures. Note that many tests and procedures will only be paid for if they are done in accredited publically-funded health facilities. If you set up your own private surgical center to do (for example) cataract extractions, the government won't pay you to do the procedure.
