Bcmp and Overall GPA

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
since nobody here is on an adcom, nobody can confirm anything.

I will agree that BCPM gpa is more important than overall. If you have a decent bcpm, then you'll probably have a decent overall gpa.

That being said, I only had a 3.2 bcpm, all other Gpa of 3.65, and cumulative of 3.4 and I got in several places.

thanks guys, appreciate the help. dont worry scub, i think skiz knot was just trying to be frank

yeah, im asking cuz im from canada and we dont have bcmps so i was just wondering what the significance of it was

skiz knot- I don't know whether or not your numbers are encouraging: I have a 3.7-3.8 science GPA (biology is my major) and a 3.48 overall. I took the April MCAT and I don't know how I did, but I felt really good about it and I'm sure of a 30+...I think...! Anyhow, I'm just wondering how much I should be banking on a stellar MCAT store because my GPA is so much lower than most averages.

If anyone else has heard this I'd love to know - anyhow, I heard the most med schools multiply your cum GPA by 10 then add in your MCAT score to determine whether or not/how you get an interview - for example,

3.3 x 10 = 33 + MCAT 32 = 65

Interviews are granted with no other criteria considered to any 70+ apps, if you're in the mid-high 60's they look at the rest of your app, low 60's you better be pretty damn remarkable in every area besides cum GPA and MCAT, below 60 and your interview chances are slim.

I heard this from a med student that teaches for PR and really has no other credibility, I don't know him, just met him on a clinical, so if you buy this take it with a grain of salt and let us all know if you've heard anything similar!

i have seen that before somewhere on the forum, but i think most people dismissed it. hopefully admissions isnt only an all numbers game. it did take me weeks to write a ps, they better read it!

no worries...my panties are unwadded now 🙂

i've heard that little quote before too about the take your gpa x 10 add in the mcat etc and you get that magical we will consider your application number. it doesn't seem realistic to me since i know ppl w/not great gpas & not outstanding mcats but great everything else who have gotten in. who knows...it all seems so random!

I have heard something very similar before. I started a post about it in pre allo about a week ago. Search for admissions calculation or all posts started by skiz knot, if that doesn't work.

Basically I heard that there is a pretty good likelyhood you get into an allopathic school with bcpm gpa x 10 + mcat > 65. It is definitely not set in stone, but it probably is a pretty good indicator.

To the OP, I wasn't trying to be mean. Just pointing out the fact that nothing is known. Admissions is a crapshoot. 🙂

Based solely on #'s, I would think you have a very decent chance of admissions with a 3.7-8 sci gpa and a balanced mcat around 30 (or more). As a science major, science classes are most of your classes. A 3.5 overall is not that low. If the average is a 3.6 for those accepted, you fall within 1 standard deviation of any school in the US.

You should be just fine. :luck:

which is looked at more, the science gpa or your overall gpa? is it better to have a higher bcmp or an overall gpa?
Depends on the type of school you're looking to get into. The more competitive the medical school, the more emphasis they place on your math/science GPA... at least that's the impression I've gotten from the admission committee member's I've spoken to.

When I look at my GPA in determining my competitiveness, should I look at my BCPM GPA (3.56) more than my overall GPA (3.44) ? What about my upperdivision GPA (3.89) or my Junior/senior year GPA (3.92) --> Both of these are heavy BCPM

just think about it like a 3.5... your overall and science gpas are in the same ballpark
