Is scrubbing in/wearing a facemask any different with a beard? I've had my beard shaven during my surgical rotations and externships. However, with residency starting in a few months, I'm glad to have my beard back and now that I'll be employed, I don't need to maintain honors evaluations . Really though, will a regular facemask suffice?

I'm not asking about whether or not I should keep my beard. My 5 o'clock shadow is more like a 1pm shadow unfortunately, and scruff looks much less professional than a well-kept beard.

Here's a pic of my beard 'fullness' for reference

Probably hospital dependent (and beard length dependent). I know several attendings and residents at my program that wear regular facemasks over a well trimmed short beard. However techs with large beards are forced to wear the "beard covers" (not sure what the official name is). Never seen an attending or resident with a full beard for comparison. Likely all boils down to how stringent your hospital is about what length of beard requires additional coverage.

Yeah, the evaluations of the people who will be employing you for the next 5-7 years definitely don't matter...

I meant that I don't need to give a fake smile or keep a baby smooth face for a 90 vs a 85 on a rotation. If they evaluate me based on mundane things , what does that say about them? I hope you don't give negative evaluations for facial hair!

Thanks @Hangry I'll have to head to the OR and try one of those on.

I have short, trimmed facial hair, as do a number of other residents here. I have never seen someone wear something like that. I'm not saying that we shouldn't. I'm just saying that at least in our neck of the woods that isn't required. But if it were... I'd shave.

And my wife would be pissed.

And thus I would be pissed.

And then I'd ask for the RCT that shows that those things help.

And then they would say no.

And then I would be sad.

And then I would think about drinking.

And then I'd remember that I don't drink.

And then I'd go play Minecraft.

Okay, enough procrastinating studying for my VSITE 🙁

but those beard hairs must be a problem, unlike the eyelashes and eyebrows that are routinely allowed to hang out free. similar to how the arm skin is highly infectious but the neck and forehead skin is a-ok.

Hey speaking of beards.
who cares?
