I don't think i've asked this question before but can acne prevent you from getting into pharmacy school? Before you all jump to the conclusion that I am a crater face, let me explain. First, I donn't have acne but I do have rosacea which makes my skin red but I have stuff that calms that down/ plus makeup and such...so that is not a problem. But damn at my prepharmacy club at school I see so many people with lesions on their skin, bumps, spots. I don't know how they will attract any customers as a pharmacist if skin problems are one of the many reasons why poeple come to the Rx to get treatment for? I am sure I wouldn't want anyone with pus on their face to touch my meds! sorry lol. but yah. I mean I'm not that picky but their are a lot of middle aged people that are and they would go to another Rx if they have the option to do so having so many Rxs now.

Do you have a cyst?

Well anyhow I think it will make a difference. I went to an interview with no time for makeup & didn't blow dry my hair, I looked ok..anyways I didn't get in and a girl who fixed herself up very well got in, with a Marketing degree!! WTH!!

I thought I should not wear make up and just look simple and conservative, wrong!!

BTW, both of our interviewers were female, maybe hers was a lesbo..

Oh and to answer your question, yes, cover it up.

i doubt it had anything to do with your guys' looks. what if she had a stronger gpa, better essays, LOR, experiences, extra-curricular activities, etc. don't be so quick to judge that the decisions were based on something as superficial as make-up and damp hair.

Wow you would really not go to a pharmacy if you saw the pharmacist with acne on their face? That's pretty shallow. Perhaps you're projecting your insecurities on others. I want to make sure my prescription is filled correctly...it doesn't matter to me what they look like.

Well I had a 3.7 and a really strong background in healthcare since high school..tons of extracurriculars and work experience all related to healthcare...

all she had was working in a dr's office for a few months as a clinical assistant & working in a gov't office for 5years woopeedoo.

oh well....

mmm makhan...soo fatty, it probably causes acne 😀

What about PCAT, interview, supplemental, personality, attitude...? They don't just go on stats at the interview.

Seriously, I think everything matters, and that includes our looks.

It's a fact of life: looks matter, and those who say otherwise are either saints or liars.

Stats, extracurrics, essays, LORs, research, blahblahblah, are all things anyone can see on paper. Our looks, however, are what anyone can see ON us. We just got to make do with what we have.

Sure, looks matter to a certain, shallow extent. However, I personally would not base my choice of pharmacy on whether or not the pharmacist has acne or any other skin condition. Maybe that's just me.

I believe people represent themselves in two ways: thru physical appearance and through the voice. An unattractive person can trully make up for that by having a beautiful voice.

I had a freind with whom I initially got to know thru the phone but have never met. My whole perspective of her was entirely based on her voice. She sounded so intelligent, mature, beautiful. Yet when I finallly met her she was a tomboy and looked like she was a 16 year old boy even though she was in her mid 20s. yet I still based my views abotu her on her voice because that was my first impression of her and as we know first impressions generally stick. If I had initially met her in person I would not have seen her the saem way. I wouuld not see her as mature, sophisticated, professional because her physical appearance would have won over. The voice is trully what is reflected within the person and should be what represents him/her. The voice is like a channel thru the mind and heart.

So yes, there are still hopes for ugly people and I know a lot of ugly poeple out there with the most beautiful voices and vice versa.

There is still hope for ugly people ? This just sounds sooooooooooo😱 wrong and mean - at the same time. So according to you ugly people with ugly voices are doomed forever ?😱😱😱

I practically live at UCSF campus - since I literally live a few blocks away from that school and all the students I have noticed there so far are not exactly super models - in fact far from it. Looks matter, but only so much, I believe it's your BRAINS and PERSONLITY and PERSONAL qualities that ultimately gets you in. It's not like the adcom comittee is going to have a GB with you on during your interview. I find it beyond amusing that you, americans, put sooooooooo much weight on the looks, yet you are one of the most obese nations in the world.🙁

The whole thing about not going to a pharmacy because pharmacist has acne just sounds super shallow to me. It would be one thing is you are going to a dermatologist to get acne treatment and he has bad acne himself - but how in the world pharmacist having acne makes him bad pharmacist ? I swear I am reading some of the posts on this forum and I wonder if 14 year old has posted this.

Cystapharm, I really do hope you grow up and realize that there is more to people than looks. 😱 I think it is very shallow to think this way. I can understand wanting to look for a significant other that has the look that you want, but in a pharmacist/professional, it's just silly.

Ok to some extent looks are very important.....its HUMAN NATURE! and everyone is shallow to a certain extent. its not just Americans! its universal and if you take a speech class you will learn about a bunch of different studies conducted around the world that show how shallow people are! for example...you're more likely to get favors from people on the streets..asking for directions etc if you're attractive. beauty wins over in job interviews. beauty wins over in everything! If you've ever workd in a high end restaurant you will know that that bosses generally hire beautiful people to work at the front because thats who customers see when they first walk in. I am not the one whose shallow here. I just have a lot of experience in life and in people and I knonw its negative but regardless it is inevitable. How are you gonna trust someone to take care of your meds if they can't take care of themselves, their hygience, etc. if they don't have the knowledge to get treated for whatever that czs their acne. they should have knowledge about this already being in pharm school. Wouldn't it be ironic that a customer comes in with a rash/ and or lesion and gets consulted by a pharmacist with rashes on their face? oh the irony!

i DONT THINK ACNE WILL PREVENT YOU FROM GETTING INTO PHARMACY SCHOOL...APPEARANCE DOES MATTER BUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT APPEARANCE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE WAY YOU ARE DRESSED AND THE WAY YOU ARE PRESENTING YOUR SELF....NOT EVERYONE LOOKS LIKE A MOVIE STAR OR MODEL...SO DONT WORRY ABOUT YOUR ACNE.....

yazzman... easy on the caps lock

yes, we live in a superficial world where looks can matter, but in a pharmacy interview, adcoms are professionals who will make their decisions based on qualifications, potential, and motivation.

Your "logic" is messed up in so many ways I am debating whether I should bother writing a long "truly logic" post or if I should go study some pchem. I think pchem wins !🙂🙂🙂

Yes...its ultimately up to the adcomm to decide who they will accept. yes being a great pharmacy has to do with the intellect. but after 4 years in pharm school the rest is up to you whether you will be of value to the company and/or have many returning customers who will see you thru the flaws on your face among other things.
I am not shallow people. this is the real world.

What you're saying is true to some extent... that society is shallow for letting all the things you mentioned happen...but in the same breath you claim that you are not shallow despite the fact that you would not want your scripts to be filled by a pharmacist suffering from acne. I don't get it.

What I said was that I am not that "picky" when it comes to this matter but I know customers who demand everything to be right and of the norm. But read what I said about how I have to rethink about a pharmacists "aseptic procedures" if they themselves can't take care of their infections.

Hmmm...I could not find your post where you said you might have to rethink having a pharmacist fill your script if it involved doing aseptic technique but I did find this...

I am getting my BS/BS next semester - so that freshmen level speech class you keep referring to - I am a bit past that point already. 🙂🙂🙂. Admissions comittee are not going to have a gang bang with you during the interview in order to accept/decline you - so your professional appearance - suitng, ect - is as much as the looks are going to get you. You are shallow, you can scream that you are not, but your initial post says otherwise. Sure a lot of people are shallow, but pls do not judge everyone from the level of your shallowness.

As person who had horrific acne in my teen years ( I have a skin a millions girls would kill for right now) and was teased about it constantly I have to say I do not see how having acne has anything to do with personal hygiene. Back then I washed my face a billions times a day, I was super clean, I tried everything - including proactive. Nothing worked and it just went away on its own when I was 17 and my skin changed completely. Some people just hve a bad skin - perhaps it's something they can't fix and it has nothing to do with bad hygiene.🙁

Thought you had to study?

Again one does not need perfect skin in order to be accepted! But in the field of health care one does have to appear "somewhat" clean looking and that includes not having "severe" NOTICED I SAID SEVERE acne because like I said it will not get you credible points from prospective customers. sorry. nuff said. Maybe I will see you for who you are but I am not one of the millions of people out there.

again it goes back to how you siad earlier how it would be awkward in the filed of dermatology but pharmcacy is no different when they are ones who do consultations on skin conditions as well.

To change the subject a bit...what about being obese?
I have recently lost about 40 pounds and I am continuing to lose but I am very paranoid about my weight!! I don’t think it will be held against me but I have seen first hand that there is prejudice against the significantly over weight. I think I carry my weight pretty well but Lord I’m worried.

i know a good amount of pharmacist who arnt very attractive so i dont know where this logic came from. i mean acne dosnt matter, hell we all prob have break out once in awhile but if ur face is full of puss or whatever u might want to just clean it up or put make up or something light to cover it, dosnt hurt. Some of u here are dumb when u say the world is shallow and all this crap, to u all i have to say is that those ppl will end up divorced and fighting for kids like 50% of americans bc once u get tired of that persons face u dont want them. anyways get a grip and just LOOK PROFESSIONAL

Pharmpills, you should really stop throwing the world dumb around, even the 95 PCAT score won't help you if I get to you. 🙂 On the lighter note: Are you sure you are not a pre-med ?

Answer to your problem= Go to Dermatologist, GET ACCUTANE! Works wonders... only thing that is guaranteed to work..must have prescription though.

I'm not even going to comment. Reread your post. Read mine. Read your reply. I may accept your apology if it is sincere. 😎

Looks don't matter too much after you had a few Samuel L. Jackson's!

Hmm...well let me start off by saying that I have been taking prednisone for over 3 years now. Thankfully I am on a LOW dose now and don't suffer from acne at the moment but I have...BAD. It makes ME self conscious. I think THAT can have an effect on things if you are not confident in yourself. I had to learn to accept myself and enjoy who I was instead of the way I looked so much. I think the best thing to do is to make yourself look as nice as possible. If you are presentable and put together then what more could anyone ask for? I know I would probably see any pharmacist.

You know what REALLY helped my skin though? (Well besides lowering my dose of medicine) Bare Minerals - Bare Escentuals make up - powder foundations. It is amazing how well it covers and my face began to clear up immensly right when I started using it. It looks so natural too. If you don't believe me then pm me and I can send you before and after pics. I just had to throw that in there. You can get a starter kit with brushes and everything. That saves some money.

But yeah, as I was going through that there was nothing I could do to make my acne clear up. I was doing everything. Wear make up and nice clothes and fix your hair and feel confident in who you are and you should be fine. 🙂 Good luck. I can totally understand what you are going through.

I've always been tempted to try Bare Minerals, but I usually just stick with my $3 drug store foundation ('cause I'm cheap that way). Maybe I should get some.

I just realized that I assumed you are a girl...so if you are not then that post made no sense.

LOL...

Oh yeah. I DEFINITELY recommend it. I will NEVER change to any other foundation after using this stuff.

an apology u wish  i think u owe me one 😀:laugh::laugh:

I didn't really expect one from someone of your intellect and communication skills. I really just wanted to quote your assinine response to my comment to highlight your ignorant sense of communication, peversion of the English language and the blatant hypocrisy with which you attacked me. Of course all of that went right over your head. Good luck with your endeavors. 🙄

I think looks is pretty important. I used not to wear any make-up or take care of my physical appearance, and yes, people looked at me different at that stage. However, when I wear a little make-up and take care of my physical appearance more, I notice people do treat me differently.

I don't think it's a matter of being ugly or not pretty. It is just how you take care of yourself. If a person can't take care of himself/herserlf, how would a patient trust him/her to take care of his/her medication?

I think people at least should look a little presentable when it comes to work with other people.

ps: I heard about Proactive but never tried. But I would recommend Bare minerals! I have no break-outs when using this but it really depends on the skin type 😀

Ok, this is really odd and weird but I was on the 28 bus line in San Francisco and I actually heard two girls - also pre-pharms talking about this precise topic on SDN. I never realized how many people read SDN. I won't go into the details of their converasation but one of them said that it' ironic how someone with Rosacea and problematic skin herself (the author of this thread) would not want to be helped by the pharmacist with acne. My point precisely - bad skin is not the end of the world, but if according to you it is - you've got problems.

Thank you, I was about to make the same point. I previously had acne and did two rounds of Accutane. If anything, I practiced hygiene to the point of overkill.
