I got into medical school in 2004 after alot of hard work.spending alot to goto med school. My question.1st year is almost finished,i am confused.
I am a hard worker and do about a B+ in all tests.Recently my cousin got a residency in the US.He had 99,98 Scores in the USMLE.
I said to myself hey? who am i kidding i have never acheived scores like that in my whole life.Without scores like those i will never get a residency in the US.Here in my home country medicine is too saturated. Some advice
Are all of you just like me??
or is it my projection that all except me are genius doctors.

When you get into med school you start a new chapter. It is like starting once again. You can very well be the topper of your batch despite others having superior scores if you are focussed. It is a whole different ball game.
In my batch some of the gold medalists barely made it to med school, but they came out with flying colors. Medicine is more of hard work than pure genius. Then many dark horses or apparently average students made it to great residencies and some of these gold medalists couldn't. So we start a new chapter each time in med school and then in resdiency and so on.
I do not have 99 and 98, but i have fairly high scores.
As long as you have high scores (nineties, it doesn't matter how high in nineties) you are good. In the US getting a residency depends on many other factors as letters of recommendation(how strong they are and how famous the letter writers are in the speciality of residency), research work, publications (if any), personal statement, motivation and communication skills.
I have seen some FMGs with excellent scores, but they were not very comfortable/confident with english language, so didn't fare well in the residency match.
Then there are certain specialities in which an FMG cannot get into (very little probability), no matter how good his/her scores are and no matter what he does.

Don't give up on your dreams. Just relax, It is a long and tough road.
How horrible is it in your home country to practice medicine?

Listen, all it really takes is a passing USMLE score and time... You may not match the first couple of times but you will eventually. work hard try to maximize your score but more importantly pass and you will eventually gain a residency... probably in Internal Medicine..that is one of the most prevalent residencies given out especially to foreign docs. Everything will workout...keep an optimistic outlook on your future and you will make it... I promise..My father is a foreign doc who failed a few times before actually passing...and then he eventually passed and now he is a super specialist in the US. Perseverance is the key..but just pass and give it time. GOod luck
