This isn't exactly a Pre-Medical topic, but it relates to school.

I'm a pretty good writer and my college doesn't offer programs for students to become tutors through the school. Essentially, I'd like to tutor students who are weak in this area and eventually move on to tutor Chemistry (another subject I'm do well in). What would be the best method of going about doing this?

All univ's have an integrated learning center (maybe called something else on the east coast univs), just go and apply there. you can also go to the student employment services and they should be able to guide you.

good luck 🙂

There isn't any single answer to your question. You could....

-Start your own "business" (i.e., advertise that you tutor around school and/or in the community and take college and/or high school and/or middle school students)

-Find a tutoring business and apply (i.e., centers for people with special needs, incl. HS students who are falling behind)

-Find a prof willing to let you TA one of their classes (often includes tutoring during office hours)

-TA a lab (writing, science, etc.)

-Tutor for another school (e.g., the local CC)

...And the list goes on. It all depends what you're willing to put into it and what you hope to get out.

East coast university student here, ours is called the learning center haha. But yeah, that's how I tutor. Just apply to your on campus tutoring center and hope you get the job. Otherwise, you can put up fliers in your library or in the English buildings offering your services and see what happens.

What is the typical hourly rate?

What did you say you were 'pretty good' at? 😉

In all seriousness, your school probably has a writing center or a tutoring center. Mine does. Try there first. If that doesn't work, find a public board, print a few advertisements, and go from there. Last-ditch resort: Craigslist.

Hope that helps!

Not necessarily a bad thing, if you're industrious. The school tutoring service would otherwise be your competitor (who would undercut you).

Another market that might be more willing to pay would be high school or junior high tutoring. Especially good if you live around some more well off areas.

someone on sdn actually referred me to wyzant.com and i made decent money doing mcat tutoring for a while. try looking into that?

I haven't actually considered that. Also, I do live in a well-off area.

How would I go about doing this? Advertise with flyers or something?

I'm a part-time tutor for the Learn to Be Foundation. It's volunteer, so no pay, and the you tutor kids (online) in grades K-8. But it's a terrific foundation and experience and if interested check them out on their website (learntobe.org)

What is the typical hourly rate?

My old university charged students $3/hr and paid tutors $7/hr.

When I tutored privately I charged anywhere from $0-45, for college students who were paying themselves I usually kept it under $15, if the parents were paying then $20-30.

i started tutoring these kids for 20 an hour then i got referred to another family for 25 then again so i charged 30 then 35 then one summer i got the balls to charge 40 an hour.

I use tutoring as part of my non-clinical volunteer time, but I can understand if you need some extra cash. Usually there are students in my regular classes who ask if I can help them, however I have seen people post flyers for tutoring services.
