I'm an accountant, but returning to school as an aspiring dental school applicant. My original plan was to meet dental school pre reqs in two years, but working full time has caused some conflict. I am not getting any younger, so I would still like to apply next summer (2010), as origially planned. If I don't get in...no big deal, I'll reapply the following year. Rather...if I wait another year to apply (2011), get rejected, I am setback an additional year. Is it worth giving it a go and applying next summer (2010)? Will I even be prepared? I would appreciate suggestions/recommendations.

Degree in Finance

Pre reqs I will have completed before applying:
Principles of Biology with lab
Chem I with lab
Chem II with lab
Anatomy with lab
Physiology with lab
Physics I with lab
Physics II with lab
Organic I
Organic II

Will not have completed:
Organic I lab
Organic II lab
Biochem
Microbiology
Genetics

My school also has a recommendation committee. I am afraid that they might really beat me up for not having some of these classes completed before applying,

Thank you!!!

I'm not sure what your committee told you, but the real "pre-reqs" are considered:

bio I & II
gen chem I & II
orgo I & II
physics I & II -- all with labs
and i know my school includes 2 semesters of calculus as pre-reqs as well

anatomy, physio, microbio, biochem, and genetics are all really considered "extras," although some schools require one or two of those courses here and there.

not to say that you're wasting your time, but those extras are not required to be completed before applying, really. if anything, i would say biochem is the next most important non-prereq to finish, since a good number of schools require that one. the most important thing is to be getting good grades.

i'll also note that while it wasn't really the best decision, i'm applying this june but am taking both physics this summer and mailing schools my transcript for that after i finish. it's not as if you won't be "allowed" to apply.

good luck!

A couple of the schools I plan on applying to require Biochem as a pre-req
