I am 23 years old, I was thinking of going back to school to be a Pharmacy Technician. I wanted to know more Information on the major, and work experience that goes with it.

I don't think you really need to go to school to be a pharm tech. I was just hired this past May with no experience. I'm not sure if your state requires schooling of some sort, though. I wouldn't recommend the job, except as a way to get experience for pharmacy school. It's stressful, the pay isn't great, people suck, etc...

I'm in Florida and all you need is a high school diploma. Honestly, you will be treated like someone in the fast food industry, just paid a little more. You count pills instead of flip burgers, and the customers abuse you when you are working at the counter. Everyone expects their "order" to be ready in five minutes, especially in the drive-thru. It's good experience if you want to go on to be a pharmacist, but as a career option it sucks.

I totally agree, I have worked in a few retail as well as clinical settings as a Tech, and my only purpose for it was to gain experience for Pharmacy School. People do really treat you like crap, and the pharmacists do not really take the time to explain things, and often they are under so much stress, that, even the slightest mistake can set them off... I would not recommend the job...I made more money working in a clerical position at a medical office, and was treated 150% nicer, and worked in a relaxing, pleasent environment.

I don't believe it is worth it working in a retail pharmacy, unless you are going to work there as a pharmacist.

Sorry.

Thats because in a medical office, the patients want to suck up to you so they can get bump up on the waiting line

I would kill to get hired as a pharmacy tech. I was maintenance at a large retail store and it doesnt get any worse than that, especially when finding and disposing of 10 lbs of rotten hamburger, coldcuts, and cheese baking in the 100 degree heat. Smelled worse than crap. But I also got to deal with crap when it was bathroom duty. And you think those customers respect the "Do Not Enter" signs on the bathroom while Im cleaning it? No chance. Yeah boys, Pharmacy tech doesnt look so bad now.

There is nothing wrong with choosing pharmacy technician as a career choice as long as you understand the limitations of the position. Most retail techs that I know of (and I've been a retail tech for over three years) make no more than 10 or 11 dollars per hour. Maybe 12 if certified. Publix starts at $7.75 I believe. Unless your state requires it, do not go to school for this as it is completely unnecessary.
I enjoy my position as a technician but would go crazy if I knew I would not be moving up from there. Some patients respect you, many do not. Some pharmacists respect you; many do not.
It has it's ups and downs like any job. I like it but would not be satisfied to end the journey there. Good luck. 🙂
