Hey all-

I was wondering about transferring from SUNY Fredonia (http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=3579) to either SUNY Old Westbury (http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=33) or SUNY Farmingdale (http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=2894). Currently, I'm a Molecular Genetics major going to my sophmore year, and the reason I want to transfer from the aforementioned is that I feel very deprived there being 800 miles away from my other goals. And since I plan to compete in Wushu I need to return NYC to practice. However, at the same time, I like genetics and hope to get into med school in the long run. So if I transfer, would the adcom think I'm not devoted enough and would that affect my chance of med school? Also, which is better, SUNY Old Westbury or SUNY Farmingdale? Thanks for reading.

I don't think your transfer is going to hurt you in applying to med schools. That said, I dont think many people on this forum know enough about the respective SUNYs in terms of quality outside of the majors (Buffalo, Binghamton, Stony) and thus won't be too helpful in telling you whether Old Westbury or Farmingdale is "better."

Hmm, I just wanted some feedback because I'm indecisive about transferring, but thanks for your comment! 🙂

These school are closer, allowing you to practice wushu? I would say if that is important to you then go for it!

you should have the same chance in both schools as they are pretty close in reputation. 🙂

Now that you mentioned it, they are similar. Ah, thanks for making me realize that. I was more focused on how unique the colleges are. Thanks for the feedback!

Yes I will. And I hope it's not a bad idea, since I'll be transferring during my junior year. 😳

Im not sure but i think old west bury is a really bad school. You might as well just attend a city college instead.

Why is old westbury bad? Wouldn't it be better for me since it's bad (higher chance of acceptance)? But I think City College is too far and I'm not living in the city. I'm a long islander.

I'm from LI. They are both not very good schools. If you were serious about going to medical school, I would suggest transferring to SUNY Stony Brook. Not only is a great school, but SUNY med schools seem to LOVE Stony Brook undergrads and you will more-than-likely get an interview from Stony Brook med if your numbers are good. I know the area sucks (I am from Nassau County, less than 30 mins from Stony Brook), but you only have a year left and it would be worth it big time.

bah stony brook. i already visited their campus and disliked the place. i prefer smaller colleges within long island.

I know what you mean. To be honest, though, I think most people see Old Westbury and Farmingdale as kind of a joke. A high GPA from both of them will probably not be taken seriously from SUNY med schools unless you crush the MCATs. For both of them, anyone with a heart beat can be accepted.
