Being a TA

One of my professors suggested I apply to be TA for biochemistry next semester. How do schools look at TAing? I would like to do it, but I am worried that dental schools will look down on TAing as opposed to taking a science class. What are your thoughts?

Well, I don't know how adcom's view it, but being an undergraduate TA was rare at my school.

I did it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I worked alongside the graduate TA's in setting up and teaching the labs. Very good learning experience and fun to. But I enjoy teaching.

If teaching is something you enjoy, then do it.

I agree.
I think mane schools will actualy like it. Because as it was mentioned in many posts around here, you will have to do a lot of teaching in your career as a dentist. This includes educating your patients. Besides TAing will introduce you to the other side of the subject, you'll develop much patience and relearn a lot about the subjects. I did it, and doing it now for many courses, including Biochem. I love it so you should do it too!

Yes, being a TA is fun. But grading papers is not. You should definatley go for it, why not?? When will you ever get the chance to do something like this again?

YES, TA if you have the chance.

I think that the schools like it cause it shows that you are personable and knowledged enough to teach the subject. At my school you have NO prof/student interaction unless you REALLY make an effort, so TAing is slightly competative and it gives you a good recommendation from a science professor. You get to help people, and it's fun!

Folks,

Anything you do in college that will make you stick out from the rest like this would is good. Admissions Committees like that. Also, you will get to know your Professor and he/she would make a good person to write a letter of recommendation. This letter you will be needing in the future should be from someone that knows you well in school and can truthfully say they have knowledge of your abilities. Go for it. Win-win thing.
