so what is it counted towards in terms of ec? Just another ec or is it like a sub category of clinical experience? Obviously it can't hurt my resume. I was also wondering if my ECs for the next few years including EMS would be sufficient to be a competitive applicant of med school (I just finished my freshmen year) any suggestion will be welcomed. Here is my plan around the four essentials ECs that everyone seems to need: community service, shadowing, clinical experience, research

Research:This Summer Research Intern at an Major University, Applying for research over the summer next year at my school and hopefully i will be doing research all sophmore summer and all of junior year

Shadowing: Starting this summer: every saturday 9-5 for 10 weeks
During the school year I hope to contact local doctors and at least get 5 hours every week of shadowing: in different fields so i can experience all fields of medicine. Winter break I will be shadowing one of my friends father for an entire two week period (9-5 everyday)

Clinical: what constitutes as clinical experience?

Community Service: Goodwill store 9-5 every sundays this summer, will join community service club at school, will get like 50 hours every semester, so thats like 200 by the end of junior year: when i would like to apply to med school

Misc: EMT starting sophomore winter: this winter, until whenever

i plan to apply to med school senior year, are these general hours of the four main ECs sufficient?

I was an EMT for 2 yrs in college and part of the college EMS for 3 yrs and at one interview I had, the interviewer focused at least 2/3 of the time just on that...so I would say yes it is clinical experience (although technically "pre" clinical since it is before they get to the hospital) so it is also a great EC to have especially if you can make some sort of leadership position. (I was a crew chief my senior yr and I think this was looked upon very favorably)

An adcom I spoke to told me hands-on patient experiences are the best volunteer/ clinical experiences to have on an application. And honestly, its probably one of the most rewarding. Plus... it's a lot of fun. Best of luck!
