So I am curious is it normal for people in the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians club while in school to go to an LCGME residency or would this be in poor taste?

I have a strong desire for family medicine but have no idea if I will have a preference of allopathic vs osteopathic residency at this point. I would hate to feel socially obligated to choose osteopathic simply because of an interest group I joined.

being a 'member' of any clubs in med school has little to no bearing or effect on residency of any kind. lots of people join multiple clubs as a way to gain some minimal exposure to a field of medicine in an effort to evaluate whether they would like it or not/ to get a feel for the subject matter.

The only way being a member of any clubs will help you in any form is by holding an officer position. This shows somewhat of a longstanding commitment to a field or an attempt to get established in some area , for example, being the president of the Radiology club, and applying for Radiology residency *may* hold some kind of weight ( most likely minimal) depending on the PD's preference for what EC's they consider valuable.

All in all , its better to have an overall strong CV, with good board scores, good grades, and maybe research, whether applying to AOA or ACGME residencies. ACGME is known for liking research as a substantial EC vs other EC's.

I think I am in like 10 organizations, peds, surgery, ob/gyn, family med and etc.. I think that it if you are active on a regional or national level within the organization that would be looked upon more favorably regardless of whether it was an osteopathic organization.

Your residency training will be the most important determinant of your future ability as a physician. Social obligations like club membership should not be a factor at all.

Also, it is "ACGME".
