Generally speaking, do you get paid even if they don't need you that day? Is it different in retail vs. hospital?
 
we're a 24 hour pharmacy, so no one takes call.

however, in other departments in my hospital...if someone is on call and they are called in, they are paid for 4 hours [no matter how long they are there....could be 20 minutes, could be 2 hours]...if it exceeds 4 hours, you are paid for however long you are there.

no one is paid for just "being on call" unless they are actually called.
 
I took calls for 6 years... some as a staff pharmacist and some as a Director. As a director, I didn't get paid for being on call. As a staff, I got paid a few bucks per hour for being on call...then got paid 2 hours if I had to go in...
 
The hospital I work for gives you 2 or 3 dollars for each hour you are on call, and then at least 4 hours of call in pay, plus each additional hour that you are there.
