I'm not sure if I've got this straight, but benzodiazepines are supposedly easy to develop tolerance to and be dependent on.. they shouldn't be prescribed for more than 4 weeks without good reason, right?
Well, if someone keeps taking Xanax.. they should keep increasing the dose the more they become tolerant to it. Is there a limit to how high of a dose they could take if they never stopped taking it? And what could be some of the side effects or prolonged use of this drug other than its sedative effects?
I know a person who has been taking Xanax for the past 25 years, does not recall why it was exactly initiated, but keeps getting his prescription renewed because he's dependent on it, and no one is bothered to attempt to start him on withdrawal. But he's been taking the same dose over several years.. so is it a psychological dependence.. like a placebo effect, rather than physiological in this case? How come he's not taking higher doses every few months? I'm not sure of his current dose..
