It seems like there are a lot of Cal students on this site so I thought I would pop the question...does anyone know why our career centers website makes it seem as if getting into a med school from Berkeley is harder than someone who went to another school.

http://career.berkeley.edu/MedStats/top20.stm

Do med schools thing us Cal students are just nerds or is the career center recieving incomplete/inaccurate data? For example, only 10 students getting into UCI, 7 Davis, 8 UCLA...thats pretty hard to fathom when Berkeley is Californias second best school after that other school across the bay. Each of these schools accepts at least 200 people and it woudl seem rather absurd that since almost all of their class consists of Cali residents, that CAL students could compromise less than 1/20 of the people accepted to these schools.

Those are only numbers of peole who responded to questionaires, inquireis, etc. I don't think they are representative of actual matriculants. Also, it leaves out a lot of non-traditional applicants who took time off. I know that UCD has way more Cal students than what they report.

Davis said they had 18 cal students this year, meaning they accepted at least 30, I would say that the career center does not have complete info.

Haha, that is awesome news and something that I expected/wanted to hear, lol. Anyways, I'll ask another question...do you think I should recieved an interview at Davis if I have a 33/3.6 (double major in business/MCB). I still have no idea how strong my application is since all I really have at this time is interviews with suny-upstate, downstate and albert einstein and a rejection from georgetown (i submitted my uc's last week).

Oh yeah, anyone watching our football team destroy everyone (hehe, usc was a fluke game).FYI,Espn.com and foxsports.com's latest prediction ahve cal going to the rose bowl.

Yea, of course they are going to the Rosebowl, because they are 2nd best in the Pac-10. USC will go to the championship bowl game, so by default, the second best pac-10 team goes to the Rose Bowl. Which is cool. Arrington is crazy. He will have many good years to come. Rodgers is amazing, but McArther isn't doing so well this year. Maybe because Rodgers has so many weapons to throw too and the ace running game.

You'll probably get a sec, but who knows. Just have to wait and see. It took 6 weeks for them to send me a sec. So it might be a while.

It's nice to hear from fellow bears. I'm getting a little discouraged about the UCs though. I've been complete since 9/1 and I haven't gotten a secondary from any UCs. And I guess that people with better stats are getting rejected (ex. Davis). Yikes.

cal is not second best in the pac-10, we are clearly THE best. USC sucked eggs that game and not b.c they didnt play well but b.c Cal overwhelmed them. A few stupid special teams plays were the difference but its clear to the nation that Cal is the team to beat in the pac-10, if not the nation....

Greetings to my fellow Bears,

I agree that the Career Center does not generate a positive vibe about the success of Cal students in med school placements but rest assured, you guys will end up in great schools because Cal is recognized as an impressive school.

I am an MSI at UCSF this year and 28 out of the 140 kids in our class are from Cal (only 14-15 from Stanford this year though usually it is equal cal and stanford).

Stay positive, you deserve it!

Maybe so, but since Cal lost against USC, it doesn't matter anymore. If USC goes undefeated in the Pac-10, they will be the Pac-10 champs and most likely heading to the championship game. USC has a more balanced team, with defense and offense. Look at Cal against UCLA. Only reason they scored so much is that Cal got back the ball when UCLA scored. USC on the other hand, overwhelmed ASU, a ranked team, with their defense, and decimated ASU's secondary with their offense.

But playing at the Rose Bowl is hardly a consolation. It'll be a great opportunity for Cal to be on the national stage (since their game against Southern Miss got postponed). Rodgers and Arrington are two of the best iin the nation.

I'm a Cal fan. Have been for the longest time. I was rooting for Cal the whole game against USC. But Cal made mistakes and that's not a true mark of a great team. To say that USC is not the best team in the Pac-10 is hard to believe. Cal is awesome, but USC is very , very good. Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart are all-americans. Imagine if Mike Williams was still there.

I have a tangentally related question: Does anyone know which schools outside of California typically accept many Berkeley pre-meds? Which schools outside of California are the ones most applied to?

I am trying to figure out which schools I should apply to this summer. Thanks for any input!

U Mich is a great school and also accepts a good number of Cal students (~15+ per year). They have a HUGE California resident population (and an interest group for those who want to go back to Cali for residency) and the school is amazing at placing students for residencies particularly in California.

But U Mich is also highly ranked and spots are very competitive. NYMC, aka UC Valhalla, takes a lot of Cal students, and Vermont also. Drexel takes quite a few.

The career center is wack. I know that you need high gpa/mcack to get in but those scores are really high. They also only calculate 117 ppl that applied to med school in 2003, there are at least a 1000 from Cal... The people I know from cal had from 31-34 mcats and high gpas that got into various med schools. Maybe the really high mcats kids just keep quite...well, there are a bunch of weirdos there...

Either its gotta be lower than that, or I'm f*cked. Yeah, god damn it, I am f*cked.
