I realized I will probably never practice in a clinical setting; however I am very passionate about helping people. What are some alternative career paths besides research? Can you do anything without completing residency? Thank you very much!

Sure...pretty much anything you can do without an MD. It'll depend on what other skills and abilities you can bring to the table. An MD without any clinical experience behind it isn't really all that marketable.

Insurance companies employ MD's to vet claims. Whether they need to have completed a residency - I'm not sure.

You could become a med school professor! (although you would probably have to balance that with research)

I know a surgical resident who decided the path was too tough, dropped out, and become one of our anatomy teachers. Although to be honest, he was pretty lousy at it 🙂

there are definitely health care industry consulting jobs to be had. i know at least one guy working on wall street and two others who had gigs lined up before having a change of heart and pursuing residency.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you not in med school yet or in 1st year. This is based on your previous posts. If you are feeling this way so early, jumping ship to join another cruise might be the best idea before you rack up a billion bucks in debt. If you are just curious, then totally cool. Anyway, not sure if you thought of this option but some specialties are pretty much outside of the wards/clinics/OR if that is what you are looking for. For example, pathology and radiology. Good luck!

Psychiatry might be a great choice too.
