Pharmacist Salary Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
And those pharmacists with the highest pay (especially in retail) will earn every penny of it. The chains are paying that much because they can't get anybody to work for them. Why do you think that is? Part of it is the shortage, another part is just bad working conditions and a lack of any semblance to healthcare.

I'm actually taking that stance myself in my little job hunt. Anything that pays over $105k, I'm instantly skeptical about. I'll take a $20k pay cut if the job is good and I get M-F hours, easy.

For CVS is LA /Ventura I got an offer for next year( iam still 4th year) for 56$ an hour with 5000 signing bonus.

CVS/Wags in the Texas Panhandle pays about 50-55 starting (partly because the panhandle sucks big time)

but not as bad as Big Spring/Midland area where summer internships pay ~20/hr

I have a presentation in one of my P1 class and I need to find compounding pharmacist salary. Let me know if anyone have an idea. I called some compounding pharmacies but they wouldn't tell me. Thanks!

The salary is not going to be that much different from the retail pharmacy salary in your area. At least that is what I know of the one pharmacist I know who works in my area in the facility which is on the compounding pharmacy locator website.

So.....just take the high end of your local retail pharmacist salary. Who's to say its any different?

Oh - & what a silly question a professor would ask of any pharmacy student! What could be the purpose?????

sorry - I just realized you're pre-pharmacy. This is irrelevant information. As has been said many times on this forum - income is reflective of the geographic location you're in.

$90,000 is more accurate for retail pharmacist. 70k could be more accurate for Hospital Pharmacist. Why don't you email the authors of both sites with your questions and report back what you find?

Spoken like a true preceptor.

Aw comeon, make with a number! 😀

eleventy billion is the correct number.

I had to do the same presentation, but my pharmacist was a "regulatory pharmacist". It was awful. The salary is bs anyways. It's all relative.

does anyone know what the hourly rate is for a target pharmacist in so. cal?

how much money do some of you make?

hey we all know pharmacists make a lot (usually over 100,000) but does any body know how much of it they usually get after TAXES? my guess would be like 70,000 or lower

There are lots of tax calculators if you google it, you can play around with many options.

Wow there are so few salary threads in this forum, the OP is very insightful and original in his questions!

That would depend on so many factors it's way too hard to tell.....

If everything goes as I have planned, I should be 500k in debt.

I want to buy a pharmacy in my community straight out of pharm school.

why is it in UK threres less salary for pharmacists then in US?

I think pharmacists in the US make the most in the world? This statement sounds kinda awkward to me  Correct me if i'm wrong (in regards to the salary statement) In Canada, fresh grads in major cities start off between $42-$45 /hr.... that would be $43-$46/hr US.....is anyone else surprised that the Candian dollar is more than the US. Its a good time to go shopping down south! 😀

we learned in class that the avg starting salary is 108k👍

108k seems like it would be the avg in retail-that seems a bit high to be the avg salary of pharmacists in all practice sites. After some experience I now subscribe to WVU's philosophy posted above....

Since pharmacy pays a fairly high rate per hour, it seems like one would be able to work part-time, receive benefits and still live comfortably while not getting burnt out from work. esp if you consider the relatively low cost of schooling(public, in-state) compared to other professional schools.

I was searching around craigslist today and found a prison pharmacist position, in CA, paying about 135k, sounds like a sweet deal.

Hey.....thanks for the tip!! I live in Stockton,CA (30 minutes from this location) and applied for this position - I take my physical on Monday -they hope to have me on board by the end of next week. The POC - Stacy - wants me to put the word out there that they are still looking for one more rph with their ca license - so if anyone's interested send her an email. Great pay, great hours and great potential for perm. position with the state = great benefits!!!

thanks again!!! 😀

A local hospital here is paying $109, which is $1,000 more than retail. But, I prefer retail so I'm sticking with my current job.

when determining to accept an offer, what other criteria should you consider?? in terms of benefits??

401k and 401k matching, vacation, staffing, advancement, holidays, retirement, continued learning, Where and who is your boss, overtime, other services the pharmacy offers: mtm, vaccinations etc, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, malpractice insurance. The list goes on.

  • 401k and 401k matching
  • Vacation
  • Volume/Staffing
  • Career Development (advancement)
  • Holiday working requirements/pay
  • Professional development
  • Health Insurance
  • Stock Options
  • Distance from home
  • # of locations if applying to a chain. Can you transfer if the environment is not for you?
  • Sign on bonus
  • Flexibility of schedule

thanks for the input...i guess I was thinking along the lines of things besides the obvious benefits, such as them paying for license study materials and fees and other stuff that people normally wouldn't think of...

I doubt those little things could outweigh any of the major benefits listed above anyway.

i guess that's true....just trying to cover everything since it's a huge decision to decide to commit to a company...for those of you who have had multiple offers when you graduated...what was some the determining factors for you deciding on which company you accepted a job offer from???

Hi, Im from Colombia Im a PharmD, and I've been working in the R+D making solid dosage forms, but I'm a little sad because de salary, im earning less than 15K per year and with 2 year more of experience (5 years) I only can apply to earn 24K. And I want to get licenced in US, but first i want to learn english in US, its possible to study and work there?

And if is possible, I can work in a drugstore or lab, in a position that not requiere licence? while i get it. I ask it because Im planning to go to US in 2008 to finished my english studies and pay this with a job there, obviously I can't apply for a R+D position because the language, but a modest job while I get the licence would be really nice.

Thanks

Chains have ranged from 55hr for Charlotte and Winston to 58 for more rural areas.

i've learned several things since the day i posted this thread.

1. our profession is always in demand within the next 20-30 years. my pharm. manager told me.
2. wait until your school's job fair interview in the spring. otherwise, you gonna get bombarded with your interviewers' offer of employment.
3. it doesn't matter where you go. your starting salary for community pharmacy must be at least in the upper $ 50K, not less. hospital pharmacy is in the upper $ 40K.
4. never agree or even worse sign the contract. i'm sure the longer you wait, the more opportunity you get.

again, thanks everyone
