I've recently been accepted and I am in the market for a new PC to replace my (ancient) "desktop replacement" laptop. I have contacted the school to see if they have specific computer requirements, to which there are none.

I like the idea of 2 in 1 laptops for taking notes, reading, being lightweight, writing papers, etc. I have my choices narrowed down to the following:

Microsoft Surface Pro 3
Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro
Lenovo Think pad Yoga 14

I need something that will last the next 4 years, however, I do not know the computational requirements necessary. Would any of them work better than others? Anyone have experience with these? I've never taken notes on a tablet, is it as good as paper? Should I just get a traditional laptop?

I don't have personal experience with those devices, so I can't give specific advice on them. I bought a ThinkPad x230t (convertible laptop and tablet) right before school, and I've been pretty happy with it.

When I was shopping for it, I looked into the surface pro and the yoga, and decided they weren't enough for me to consider them primary laptop material. I'm not too tech savvy (I had a lot of help from my boyfriend in picking my computer), so I can't remember what about them made them less appealing.

I do know that the ThinkPad line is very reliable. Lenovo has great warranties available (I went for the three year accidental coverage).

And in general, taking notes on a laptop is pretty great, but some people stick with handwriting. I do a bit of both - i type up notes during lecture, and then hand write outlines. Having all of my slides annotated on my computer is great for organization though.
