I may have seen a thread like this before, but I thought I would start a new one. What are or have been your best and worst investments? Now I am not talking about your stock market investments or your real estate investments, boats, etc. I am talking about investments between $1 and $1000 dollars that have made your life so much easier or that you have ended up using daily for years with much joy. Worst investments would be same price range but the opposite, things that sit on the shelf and have never been touched. I am interested to see others lists as I might get some ideas.

In no particular order

BEST:
1) Amazon Prime: $79/yr. No tax on online shopping products. FREE shipping. Delivery in two days. Awesome!
2) All in one HP Copier, Printer, Scanner, Fax: As Jet would say, it's DA BOMB! Can't remember the cost, but it has paid dividends. People may think this is now just standard, but hey I went through residency (not too long ago) without a printer or copier. Forget about a fax! To now have all that power in one machine, I really value it.
3) My shredder: Paid about $200 for it. In residency that would have been crazy. As attending it is a wonderful investment. I had a mini shredder in residency. One page at a time and after about 20 shreds you were emptying the thing out. The alternative was hand tearing all this mail garbage. Now I have a beast. The shredder shreds up to 14 pages at once! Whole envelopes go straight in with all their junk contents. The garbage bin is like a regular size wastebasket so emptying it is not as frequent and is a breeze. Simply put I love it. Can't live without a heavy duty shredder anymore.
4) Automatic car starter: Cost $500. Didn't think it would be. I thought just turn the car on when you get to the car. My wife wanted it more. So I got it for the family car (Ford Expedition) for Mother's Day. We have two little ones. Very quickly I see the value. We live in 110+ degree summer heat. We use the starter EVERY time we are out in the car. Arriving at the car and appreciating the temperature difference immediately as you are strapping the kids into the car seats is priceless. Considering it gets used on every occasion, I would say it is a good investment. I would imagine it would be awesome for those who live in 0 degree winters as well.

I am sure I have more best, but that's it for now.

WORST
-Any gym membership I have ever bought. I am just lazy in that regard, and it's money down the toilet

Best investment:

KTM 350 EXC-F:

Lightweight EFI 4 stroke. A do it all enduro dirt bike disguised as a dual sport adventure bike.

2012-ktm-350-exc-f-six-da-8_600x0w.jpg

I am so pumped about this. Road ready, tight trail ready, open desert ready.

Worst investment:

King size tempurpedic bed with the automatic reclining/massage add ons. I can barely feel the vibrations through the thick foam.
Simply put... uncomfortable. Can't wait to get rid of it.

I'm liking this thread already.

BTW, the do it all printer is awesome. Get it with wifi and you don't have to connect it to anything. The HP I have lets me print material across states and over seas. Also lets me scan any document and make it a PDF file. Very handy.

No tax at all on anything you buy? Is that related to your Prime membership, or just the state you live in?

Best
My Big Green Egg and the BBQ Guru Temp monitor/fan w/ wifi that i got for it.

i can smoke a brisket for 20-24hrs without worry.
its awesomeness cannot be overstated.\

Worst
2012 GMC Sierra. looks great but have had nothing but problems with it.

My cable card PC tunner (HDhomerun-3 tunners, or Ceton infinitv-6 tunners): Plug into an old Windows PC and an old XBOX= whole home dvr for $4/month (cable card rental fee).

I've got Amazon prime. Some time next year Amazon will likely be charging state sales tax in All 50 states. Right now I don't pay a sales tax either.

There are products on Amazon which are Prime eligible. Not everything on Amazon, but a nice selection. My mother lives in a different state, and she says she pays tax, so I guess it's state dependent. But u can't beat the 2 day delivery. The fam was going on vacation and I went to two walmarts in town and couldn't find the things we needed. Found them in 5 minutes online and showed up on my doorstep 2 days later tax free and shipping free. Lesson learned. Shop online first

Yes. I have the wifi hooked up. Can print things from my phone. Pretty sweet.

Interesting worst investment with the tempurpedic bed. The mattress guy tried to sell us on it, and it just felt uncomfortable so we passed.

Another best investment:
-Whole home DVR from DirecTV: This now seems to be the norm, and it should be. Record from any room, and watch a recorded program from any room. If you don't have this, it is a must as it makes life so much easier in watching TV. I remember the not too long ago times where I had to go to the office to watch a program I recorded in there. Ancient history, brother!

Best investment
Library card. I can get CDs DVDs and trial books before buying on amazon.
Basketball hoop for my driveway. My kids and I play a lot.
Ll bean hammock and chair. Anything llbean is great quality plus I use it alot
Worst investment
Keurig vue. Just buy k cup machine more cups with more variety.
Angie's list. What a scam.

Self-cleaning cat litter box. We had a thread about this invention once before I think. I'm a fan.

Hey pgg, I don't have a cat, but have you yet to upgrade to the "City Kitty"? The Cat Toilet Training Invention? Have your cat go in your toilet after 6 weeks of training! I saw this on ABC's Shark Tank.

I totally agree with the amazon prime - don't forget you get a free book rental each month and tons of movies/shows to stream (old ones but some really great ones).

I LOVE my tempur pedic mattress. I couldn't have gotten through my second pregnancy without it and even now that I've shed the baby, it's still the best bed we have ever owned (we didn't get the fancy vibration though - I probably would have been disappointed with that.

Best investment for me:
- 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee - rides like a cloud and has all the extras that make long trips with two kids enjoyable. The gas milage isn't awful and it has a remote start (which is heaven at the extremes of temperatures).
- iPad mini (with a ton of anesthesia pdf books): no longer do I have to carry around any reference books - it's all there on my iPad. I no longer use my regular ipads because the mini fits so well in my hands.
- Nordic track treadmill: we used to have time for the gym but now with two kids, it's impossible. This treadmill has been going strong for 3 years (with almost daily use). It has well paid for itself.

Worst investment:
- Insanity DVDs - what a terrible workout routine.

-Any gym membership I have ever bought. I am just lazy in that regard, and it's money down the toilet
I have all those investments and I love them all. Also, second the gym membership. I once bought a $600 treadmill from Sears and that worked out though.

I have to add a Phil and Ted's stroller to the list of good investments. I was reluctant to spend the ~$300 but given the use we get out of it, it would have been a waste of $150 to get a cheaper stroller.

Self-cleaning cat litter box. We had a thread about this invention once before I think. I'm a fan.

Ohhh, I am very interested in this.... please elaborate which one actually works and doesn't suck! The wife is pregnant again, which means once again i am scooping $hit every damn day. I don't know why it bugs me so much, but I fuking HATE IT! The cats came with the wife, or they would have been gone years ago.

Best investments: 1. Beverage Air kegerator: because cold draft beer can't be beat
2. smart phone: I was late to the smart phone craze, but now I honestly don't know how I lived without one.

Worst: i second the vote for gym memberships... getting there was the problem. some dumbbells, a chin-up bar, and a stair climber at home have worked well for me.

Agree

-IPad mini. More compact, face time, Camera, 4G. Awesome.
-Smartphone. Yes. Was gonna put it originally, but thought it was too generic. Got my smartphone as a CA3. It has made life easier. It just feels like a given to have one now, but I remember life with the flip phone. Yikes!

So any cat owners use this City Kitty and have their cat go in the house toilet? The lady on Shark Tank apparently became a millionaire with this thing. I just think of Meet the Parents..."Jinxy Cat, Jinxy Cat where are you?". "He can't flush the toilet, Focker!"

Best
-Otter Box for IPhone. Has saved my phone from getting cracked numerous times.
-Garmin GPS system. Again this seems standard now, but I remember the 8 hour drives with a list of Mapquest directions in the passenger seat. Garmins were a game changer.

Ok gotta even the score so let me think of a worst

Worst
-A charging station from Brookstone.
http://m.brookstone.com/webassets/product_images/700x700/593632p.jpg
Thought it would be handy with all the electronic equipment we have. It became a dust collector. For us at least. Maybe this was a good investment for others

different perspective-

best: gym membership. When I was a resident I joined for 4 yrs and paid the full sum up front. This locked me into a renewable $29/yr annual membership. So I pay <$3 per month, and I go 6 days a week.

netflix - I use it a lot (streaming and mail) and saves theater/itunes prices.

Worst: An adjustable rate mortgage, buying property as a resident and then moving.

Best
1. My old roommate's bed. I have never slept better in my life (and the ladies all love it too). He paid something like $2000 for the mattress. I gave him $200 when he got married and moved across the country for residency. I now understand the value of having a comfortable bed.
2. Xbox 360. I have used this thing on a regular basis for over 7 years now. Mostly for Netflix these days, but a ton for video games before residency. Amazing value.
3. VitaMix blender. I'm still early into this purchase, but there's no doubt I'll be getting my money's worth if I keep using it everyday.

Honorable mention: Netflix. I don't pay for it (use my mom's account), but if I did, it would be on the best list.

Worst
1. A $1200 digital coffee machine/robot. This was more of a forced purchase from an ex-girlfriend who was a coffee addict. I don't even drink coffee and for some reason insisted on keeping this thing when we broke up. Buying this piece of junk may just be my greatest regret of my life.

Best:
-Netflix (new and rebooted version is leagues better than Netflix of years past)
-My '04 civic, never had car troube of any kind and gets insane gas mileage with a great resell potential to boot
-Black fedora, completely necessary for a true gangster look

Worst:
-Palladium mining stock PAL
-Nintendo 3DS that was promptly stolen by an American Airlines employee a week after buying it

Apple TV- $100. Very reliable. Easy to use. Hated watching Netflix on my ps3. Too slow to get started, loud fans.

Worst: Fujitsu expensive as hell unreliable tablet PC "required" by my medical school.

Agree with Otter Box for iphone and a good mattress and Amazon Prime.

Technivorm coffee maker about $225. Water cooler in the house, lousy local tap water.

programmable thermostat and ceiling fan over bed- cut utility bills significantly.

Best:

/QUOTE]

The fedora has been the most interesting investment yet. But then I picture you acting all gangsta in your '04 Honda Civic, and I laugh.

Best:
1. Amazon prime without a doubt. And amazon mom for a while had great deals. Having to avoid goign to babies r us every month, when you know you'll end up buying more that what you intended to, as opposed to having diapers delivered on your doorstep every month.
2. Kindle/Ipad - I don't know how families had nice dinner before the invention of smart phones and apps. Keeps the kids entertained. A lot of educational apps as well.
3. Dr scholls insoles. For as much as we are on our feet in this profession, it pays to have nice comfortable shoes and padding.
4. Toaster oven - takes a little longer, but well worth the wait compared to the microwave oven.
5. Reading whitecoatinvestor and investing in my future

Worst:
1. Bowflex workout machine - just taking up space in the garage
2. Listening to a financial advisor in residency and allowing them to manage my money. Realized the returns weren't all that was promised, but they were making a killing off of commissions.

I have realized what my real best investment was after the fact:
Head and Shoulders Men Hair Endurance.
My hair looks and feels twice as thick just with this inexpensive shampoo.

Amazon prime - best. Free streaming tv and movies, including about 90% of what's on netflix on my examination. You can buy basically anything, often for cheaper than the store with no tax and 2 day free delivery. Got a 250 dollar 50lb appliance on there that they 2day shipped me. It was broken so they overnighted me a new one and shipped the old one back for free. I have no idea how they make money on this. Also, if you are a resident at any kind of academic institution, they may accept your work ID as proof of student status making it 40 bucks per year. Worked for me.

Hey pgg, I don't have a cat, but have you yet to upgrade to the "City Kitty"? The Cat Toilet Training Invention? Have your cat go in your toilet after 6 weeks of training! I saw this on ABC's Shark Tank.

We had some kind of contraption like this back in the 80s. Cat had little interest in using it.

My best investment? Tricking Verizon (after they eliminated unlimited data in June 2011). I added a line to my brothers account in 12/2011. Got Verizon to give me unlimited data.

I couldn't care less about the Verizon Galaxy Nexus that I got cause I have att has my primary carrier and go through so many phones.

There is a little known agreement in Verizon's LTE network many consumers don't now about. Per FCC regulation when Verizon purchased spectrum they use for LTE network. Verizon cannot throttle or restrict LTE usage.

What does this mean to the average consumer. It's the basis for the real reason Verizon forces consumers off unlimited data if they use their upgrade.

I can switch my Verizon LTE micro SIM card to ANY Verizon device and use it any way I want. I can also use unlimited LTE data without throttling.

That mean I put the LTE SIM card from my phone into a Verizon LTE iPad. Verizon lets me use the iPad as its own hotspot without extra charges. I have literally used 100Gb of data at times with this method.

By paying my brother about $35 for the line each month I can rack up as much data as I want on the iPad.

It functions as a home Internet wireless router when I want to. We travel quite a bit and using verizon LTE hotspot data is nice with kids on the road.

I will never give u my unlimited LTE data with verizon.

Worst investments. Like others say. Gym memberships.

More best:
-my hair clippers: For 10 years I have not paid for a haircut. This was out of necessity as I joined club Bald and Beautiful many years ago. But if you have that receding hairline and are spending the money going and getting it cut with clippers, just buy the clippers and you can do it yourself for years. Will save a decent amount of money
-agree with kindle: my wife is the super reader, and she really enjoys it

Worst:
-Bookswim: think Netflix for books. I bought a 3 month subscription for my wife as a gift. Like Netflix you form a queue and the books show up at your house. It just wasn't the same effect as Netflix. And now it seems Kindle has so many options that make getting access to books so much easier. Thankfully, it was a 3 month subscription only, but it was a bad investment

Best:
+1 on the vitamix, thing is a beast: smoothies, creamy soups, crushes ice

Worst: Exercise equipment, I like the gym, they clean up the mess

Not yet invested in: roomba

Ohhh, I am very interested in this.... please elaborate which one actually works and doesn't suck! The wife is pregnant again, which means once again i am scooping $hit every damn day. I don't know why it bugs me so much, but I fuking HATE IT! The cats came with the wife, or they would have been gone years ago.

Congratulations.

Here's the thread where we talked about automatic litter boxes a while ago.

Which reminds me ... best investments ... LASIK. My dominant eye was 20/400 but my other eye was 20/20, so I rarely wore glasses or a contact lens. I had the procedure on just the bad eye. Wish I'd done it years sooner.

Best

Micra-1.jpg

Leatherman Micra - $20, fits in the tiny vestigial jeans pocket. Can remove the ring and fold the keychain hole into the tool if you want to get rid of it. Also the only multitool I've used that actually has functional scissors. Don't expect a lot out of the knife on it - it'll take an ok edge, but won't hold it long, seems like fairly meh steel. Will open a box fine though

L_TempurPedic_CloudLux_crnr.jpg

This falls under my best and worst investment category. We bought the king sized tempurpedic mattress and it has made a world of difference in how my wife and I sleep, for the better. Don't think I'll go back to non-tempurpedic again.

But we also bought the remote controlled adjustable frame/massager and never use it. An expensive wasteful addition to an already expensive bed.

Other bests - The combo of Ipad, Netflix, and good headphones - makes overnight call tolerable. Our Cuisinart Keurig machine - that beast has taken a constant stream of use and abuse and still works on demand. And our Invisible Fence for the dogs. Relatively pricey, but in two years I have only chased a dog through the neighborhood exactly once since it went up.

Worst investment - easy, a medical degree. Just ask Miss Sallie how that's working out.

-Nintendo 3DS that was promptly stolen by an American Airlines employee a week after buying it

Many CC's offer a purchase guarantee against theft within first 90 days; Food for thought in case this happens in the future.

Keeping to your OP of <$1000 purchases:

Best:
1) Quality kitchenware (Shun knives, All-clad, Le Creuset, Lodge, Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker, Kitchenaid mixer) - Quality but not the most high-end; This stuff lasts.

2) Quality camping gear - I typically buy the lightest yet durable gear, cause lugging a ton of **** is murder on your body and will ruin your trip.

3) iPhone (I also love my Air, but it's not sub-$1K)

4) Foodsaver from the local discount store for $25

5) MUJI foldable Boston bag - I typically travel with just one 22" rolling carry-on, but packing this flat Boston bag effectively doubles my carry capacity on the way back if I decide to buy stuff from international destinations.

Worst:
1) Some Brookstone massage chair cushion that plugs into your car lighter
2) Keurig (cause it broke)

Best: Yahoo (it's gone up 70% since I bought). In terms of items... Probably my Gibson SG. Or maybe my road bike (a bianchi, all carbon-fiber).

Worst: I'll see your gym membership and raise you the 10-pack personal trainer package.

What you don't like 100 box jumps in a minute coached by some brick wall of a man who's forced to wear a fanny pack cuz he can't actually access his back pocket?

My turn:

Best: XBOX -I don't care what anyone says, I get more entertainment bang for my buck with that thing than anything else. And really, that's the point.

Worst: easy, the panoptic ophthalmoscope my medschool preached was "required" thru the use of a vendor sales pitch literally day one. Don't really think I'll be getting much use of that.....

Yes, add ophthalmoscope, manual sphygmomanometer, and otoscope required in medschool to list of useless purchases. I know somebody got a kickback for mandating these things.

I like the tech stuff

ScanSnap scanner ~$400. I don't keep any papers this rapid scanner converts everything I have to digital pdf. I also cut the bindings off my books and now on my tablet I have all my books

Synology NAS - 4 drive backs up all my pictures and all my DVDs/BluRays converted to digital so I can watch any movie on any TV, kids upstairs Wreck it Ralph me down stairs watching Wreck it Ralph 🙂

Very nice axe. Love the humbuckers... love them. 👍👍
I'm guessing you are an AC/DC fan.

Best guitar gear investments for me include:

1972 Les Paul Custom. Put $100 down and put it on lay away as a teenager. Worked at the grocery store and mowed laws for 4 months to get this bad boy. It has appreciated in value since then roughly 250% (never sell it though). Beautiful piece in sunburst.... but it's a heavy guitar.

Boss Digital Delay:

Ibenez Tube Screamer with passthrough:

Slash Cry baby:

CRYBABY_SLASH_WAH_SW_95_Lg.jpg

Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifire I picked up back in 2001. Holds it's value very well and the tone is rediculous. Warm bluesy to beautiful full sound heavy stuff. It is one of 2 main amps used to record most of Adam Jones tracks (Tool guitarist). He also uses a Diezel VH4 but that is like 4-5k.

MESA+BOOGIE+TETE+DUAL+RECTIFIER+100W.JPG

Paired it with a vertical slant 2 x12. Solid.

With this setup, I've rid my self of all my other gear/pedals and am extremely satisfied with the sound. Very organic without the need for multiple pedals that often suck down your tone. I wish I would have gone to the above set up years ago.

Now boys, this is how you get some tone (see attachment). And if I could get my hands on a Klon Centaur for under $1000, I'd be giddy.

Run my Les Paul Studio, SG, ES-135, ES-355, Telecaster, or Jazzmaster through my Fender Twin Reverb, Marshall JCM 800, or Vox AC-30 and you've got quite a sonic palette.

Man this talk makes me want to gig out again. Been about a year.

Lol. Posts like these, from Attendings, is why I not only keep coming back here but also how I know I picked the right field. The people of Anesthesia crack me up

Does it "know" what it scanned, like Neat Receipts?

Can you search for a pdf? Let's say you scan your ASA membership receipt and want to find it 3 mo later. How easy is it to find?
