I'm an IMG with limited exposure to psychiatry. I am beginning my first observership in psychiatry in US in a few days. Is there some sort of a "primer" that I can read quickly so I don't appear clueless? 🙂

My main broad interest is psychotherapy, and my main "narrow" interest is mood disorders, if that matters.

Thanks!

Case Files is always a great place to start. It's very easy to read and in case form and provides a lot of the basic material that will come up initially at the start of your rotation. You can also choose to read the cases that may be most reflective of the population you will be seeing.

You're a lifesaver. I've just finished the first two sections of the book (the ones before the cases themselves) and I can already see they are a goldmine.

Also, to hijack my own thread, I have another query: does anyone have an opinion on whether I should show up at my mentor's office for the intro session wearing a white coat or should I go without one?

It depends on the program. We hate white coats where I work, but there are places that may insist on them. I say bring it, look around you and chances are you will take it off.

Thank you! Will do.
