Best DO school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
+1 on the crumbling state funding... I'm from NJ and Gov. Chris Christie has made me have no desire to return

We have a similar state funding problem in Illinois. The lowlife politicians who have bankrupted the state have left us in this position (sadly). Can we plz trade governors?

If you're saying you want Christie, please, take him lol

^^ No problem. Both schools are solid and I would attend either.

What does "better" mean anyway. There is no real way to measure this. Even US News rankings are meaningless to me. Are Harvard and Yale BETTER than PCOM and UMDNJ? Who knows? How do you measure that? Do they attract more high level researchers/brighter students because of the "name game".....of course. Does more cutting edge research go on there.....of course.

But do Harvard and Yale produce BETTER physicians? Who knows? You cant measure it by board scores....because perhaps the students are better test takers/studiers and thats why they did better on the boards.

People just THINK they are better because of the aforementioned name game. But is there any way to prove this?

I dunno this is stupid and I am only posting here a lot today to keep from studying...

Yeah, there are ways to measure it.

Are they better? Clearly.

Do they produce better physicians? Likely.

We're talking about the best DO schools in this thread. PCOM isn't anywhere near as good as Mayo/Harvard/Yale/Stanford/Columbia, etc. Let's stay focused on the point of the thread: best DO schools!

In order to have an objective list for the pre-meds here (objective!?) we have to be honest with ourselves. Some schools are better than others.

BEST d.o. School is the one you end up ATTENDING!

How do you know?

Somewhere on a medical ward..

Dr X: Hi, I'm Dr. X, and I'll be your physician today.
Patient: Nice to meet you Dr. X. Where did you go to medical school?
Dr. X: I went to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine..
Patient: Oh great! My brother-in-law went there.
Dr. X: Atlanta branch.
Patient: Excuse me?
Dr. X: Yeah, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Atlanta.
Patient: 😕

Does anyone else find that name just a little funny? Almost like Lake Erie COM- Bradenton, Florida.

Anyway, to answer your question, PCOM in Philly, the venerated institution of > 100 years which is a better med school than some of the MD ones in Philly, and has stood the test of time, is not the same as PCOM-GA.

Oh joy, this goes back to that "is age a factor" thread where I said a 19 year old is too young for medical school and than got trash talked for saying it:laugh:

Im happy that I took an extra year of Ugrad, and a gap year before med (hopefully only one gap year)....so I have zero urge of going out and getting freshman style drunk:laugh:

Freshman style drunk? I had zero urge to do that by the time I hit second semester junior year. If I do end up going to TUCOM-NV, however, lets just say that Las Vegas will be a very hard place not to have a lot of fun at

How can you be objective if some people here cant tell a difference between an IVY and a DO.

Match list for PCOM is quite mediocre.

lol I dont really give a fck if theres a difference. I never applied to any ivies...nor would I care to go to one...with the exception of Penn. The differences are there...but they are things I dont care about.

Is PCOM going to train me to become just as good of a physician as some ivy would? Prove it isnt.

Well said.😉

Can someone please tell me what is so great about ccom? I interviewed there and it was honestly a terrible experience. The med student who interviewed me seemed like an idiot, the school does not have standardized patients or patient simulators, its expensive as hell, and they rant about their great match lists and how many people went allopathic. Everyone talks about their rotation sites, but sorry, you have northwestern's hospital, loyola's hospital, U of C's hospital, and Rush's hospital all there. Not one of their rotation sites is affiliated with these schools except one at rush. I guarantee most of Chi-towns worthy cases are going to these hospitals. So please, tell me why everyone thinks this school is so great.

I respect the call out😛

Do you know for a fact that their rotation sites are crappy or not?? Or is it because the hospitals that they rotate at don't bear the names NWern, UofC, or Loyola that make them crappy? You really sound like a premed who knows absolutely nothing outside what's been projected out of the mouth of someone else. Just because their rotations are not at those hospitals doesn't mean they are crappy or are not excellant rotation sites or that they don't see enough of "worthy" cases.

Where did I say they were crappy? But really? I'm sorry but you are ignorant if you believe that universities hospitals do not see more action than others. Please let me know when you see a tv show filmed at chicago community hospital

who cares? if you like CCOM go to CCOM, if you dont, then dont.

Action? Do you mean variety of cases or the trauma like cases you see on TV??🙄

First of all, I have been accepted to the all mighty ccom. I interviewed at kcom two weeks ago and it was hands down better. And I am not talking about some feeling you get while you're there. They have more resources(hospital, standardized patients, simulators) and I am sure a better reputation among the medical community. I read through all of these threads before I visited ccom and everyone hyped it up, but for what reason? That was my question here. I wanted an honest answer. Why the hell do people say it is so good? Because of match rates???? They had a <85% first time match rate. I have not made my decision yet regarding schools, so I am honestly looking for something good about ccom.

Should have said "I respect the fact that you thought the students were not professional etc". What I was getting at is people always praise certain schools (obvious fact) but I never hear anything bad about CCOM so its interesting to hear his experience

The schools that are established and put students into their preferred residencies (read: not just big name residencies)

PCOM's primary care skills video makes us the best.

Especially the SECOND DVD.

I remember Dr.Morris saying "you might not want to open up the videos on the 2nd disk with any teenage siblings around" lol

Well whatever I'm drunk so who wants to touch me?

I'm not questioning that reasons why you don't like CCOM or feel that its not the "all that and a bag of chips" kind of school for you, but what I am saying is how do you know that their rotation sites are crappy (you didn't say this but this is what I'm interpreting from your post) if you've never rotated at them? Big name hospitals don't equal excellent rotation sites just like community hospitals don't equal poor quality rotation sites. You're not looking at whether CCOM has a quality clinical education department or not, but rather going down the list of hospitals and seeing if they're well known or not. Matchlists/rates have more to do with the student's medical school performance than the school itself.

You respect the fact that a student is talking bad about a school because their rotating hospitals aren't shown on TV???? Sure, that's smart.🙄

Who ME??? Uhmm, I'm not drunk and I'm studying too.😕

Okay here is what happened. I am a grad student and also the student trustee at my university. I am in my office tonight chillin but there is some stupid party going on out in the lobby (for the kids who don't drink or do any bad things, you know the types... the kidn that become RAs or whatever, basically the losers) anyways I went over to a friends house to chill and we got drunk. Then I decided I was too tired to continue (usually we all wait round till like 12 or 1 and go to the bar) but i said eh screw it and came back here and the little lame ass party is still goin on. But instead of walking all the way back to my apartment, I had to stop here since it is inbetween where I left and where my destination is.

Dont feel too bad docflurrywizard, I did a whole homework assignment too earlier. I'm trying to figure out what I should do for the rest of the night. Go play video games or go out to the bar. On the one hand, I actually hate the bar and I hate going out. Im so tired of that ****, I did it for 4 years as an undergrad. On the other hand if I dont go out I feel like I'm missing out, you know? Anyway I could go play video games and just keep talking **** to PG who is just so excited that I will be in Las Vegas this summer so she can hang out with me

Notes for the Pre-Do forum

Question #1: What should cbrons do for the night?

Question #2: If i do go chill in my apartment alone what pizza should I order

What makes any of those schools "better" than any other school besides their names? Prove to me they are "better." I wouldnt be able to put up with the probable rampant douchebaggery so for me they 'aint better.

I believe the point was that Harvard, etc are the best med schools, not whether they're likely to provide you with 'rampant douchebaggery' or not. And I don't think you REALLY need me to cite sources in favor of their superiority 🙄
