I am in the process of contacting doctors to shadow, for experience. I am interested in shadowing a pathologist or a neurologist( even though i know neurologists are hard to get to). Any tips? i have emailed and faxed several but no answers!

Neurologist. The practice of a pathologist is not indicative at all of what most physicians do every day.

Also, call them.

I called the neuro department and they told me to fax :/ and im having trouble finding more neurologists to contact

Doesn't mean it's not an interesting or valuable opportunity. Definitely wouldn't recommend shadowing only pathologists. But, I shadowed a couple of pathologists and it was awesome. More so because they don't get a lot of interest and were excited to have me around and show me all kinds of interesting stuff.

OP, don't know what to tell you aside from just keep trying. Also, HIPAA is a big deal nowadays, so if you're volunteering at a hospital and already have passed HIPAA training at that hospital it might be easier to get shadow ops at the same place since the docs won't have to worry about that as much.

I suggest you include a primary care doc on your list, to get a view of medicine from the trenches (pediatrics, internal med, family practice, OBGYN). You might contact your own physician, those of parents, or friends' with a physician parent about opportunities over the fall or winter break.

I learned a lot just from shadowing a FM physician. He even let me "assist" in some procedures. I was able to help mop up blood, cut sutures, listen to heart/lung sounds, I was able to be the first to diagnose a heart murmur in a new patient (one of my most exciting days, I came home strutting that day :highfive:)

One of my most memorable things from shadowing the FM doc was a guy came in with warts on his male parts... The doc used liquid N2 to freeze them off. I was asked to help move his... member... back and forth so the doc could focus on doing the freezing. That was the first time I had to touch some other guy's junk... Good times.

Well, it depends on the doctor. I've shadowed a couple of ED docs and one was good and the other didn't even teach me anything. But I am currently shadowing a neurologists and I'm having a great time. However, it took me a month, paper work and scheduling, before I actually shadowed him. You have to be consistent and keep asking them. They sometimes forget because they are busy all the time. So be on top of it and eventually, you'll start shadowing!!

I can't even fathom how many mens and womens junk I cleaned when I give my pt's bed baths. I feel calloused and sometimes not outrightly grossed out except when they are edemitous and/or have pressure ulcers :whoa:

That physician was very generous.

My question would be, how do I get a surgeon to allow me to shadow him/her? Since I'm very interested in becoming a surgeon, I feel it's important to see what pre-op, operation, and post-op is like, and have some answers about what the lifestyle is like as a surgeon. One of the closest hospitals to me doesn't allow any students (unless they're med or nursing students) to do much, including observe operations.

Is there a VA hospital associated with your uni? I know for me, I'm not allowed in the OR of our main hospital (outside of two weeks during Christmas) but I'm allowed to go watch surgery at the VA whenever I want.

There is in Portland, but that's 5 hours away and I'm not there much. Though, I may be able to see if I can pull strings. I've really been wanting to speak with a neurosurgeon at OHSU, so maybe I could find a double-excuse to be up there and just go on a weekend.

Thanks for the tip 👍

Shadow a primary care, specialist, pharmacist, dentist, anything in the healthcare field so you can show that you've explored the multiple explore careers!

Probably shouldn't waste your time with pharmacists or denstists if you are dead set on going to med school. But to explore your options, fine, but you really won't be able to put these experiences on AMCAS for MED school. Just a thought.

There's an orthopedic surgeon in Dallas, Tx named Dr. Richard Buch. I'd love to shadow him.

I'm joking. I'd suggest, as one already has, anything having to do with neuroscience.
