Best ER Residency In the Nation

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
not an em resident myself but gotta put in a plug for the local team at la county/usc. the place rocks. in the 90's it was the second busiest trauma ctr in the world(after the one in south africa). don't know if that still is the case or not. I remember being a paramedic and bringing folks there. it was so busy that we would be calling for orders on full arrests from the ambulance bay because at times they didn't even have hall beds available.then when they do let you in you have to get past the traige nurse who sits behind bulletproof glass. that is hard core.

I thought this had been decided years ago... In N Out... apparantly nothing else compares.

Sadly, they didn't even bother to sneeze at me.

Maybe you can get selected for their coveted fries fellowship.......although I know Fetus is gunning for it pretty hard.

There are rumors of an em pa residency there at in n out as well.
they probably won't let us spread the sauce though, some things have to be left for the docs after all.

I heard you all were going to be relegated to the fast track side of things......you know, drive through. 😉

well, that was the initial thought but then they decided to let us learn a few invasive procedures like cutting the onions.
don't know if they will ever let us man the grill though. maybe at the smaller franchises like in maine, vermont, and new hampshire. guys gotta have something to hope for.

Could be worse....they make us RT's man the registers.

This is an age-old question with no real answer. There is no "best" program. Answers vary by region and by personal preference.

For instance, Southwesterners will swear that In-N-Out is by far the best program ever, for various reasons. However, being from the Midwest, I had never even heard of In-N-Out until I was interviewing. I had always dreamed of a residency at Taco John's.. And I was amazed when people told me they hadn't even applied there. Of course, the Southerners want Steak-n-Shake and will do just about anything to get in there.

With that explanation out of the way, my residency is the best because of the wonderful selection of pies in the cafeteria (I think I mentioned that previously).

just wait until they let you make the BLOOMIN' ONIONS!!

California Hospital (where King residents are rotating now) is rapidly gaining on USC in terms of trauma. They get all the trauma King used to get from South Central, plus they are near downtown and skid row. Last month they had 200 trauma activations, which surpassed Harbor-UCLA and Long Beach. If things continue like this they will surpass USC eventually. Most of the trauma is penetrating too, not BS blunt stuff. This isn't too bad for a medium-sized community hospital with no surgery residents.

Steak-n-Shake is only known for its shake rotation. The steak months leave you wanting more. I've always considered Cracker Barrel to be the best hospital in the South.

I spent 5 yrs in the midwest and I never heard of Taco Johns until I was applying. IMO very humble opinion.. the top 2 are

1) In N out.. because of the number and quality of fellowships offered..
2) Steak and Shake... While some downplay the importance and might not understand the content the shake fellowship is reputedly akin to doing 2 fellowships anywhere else.

I didn't realize california got accredited again. last I heard they were shut down for going on "divert" with no pts in the dept to have a staff party(seriously).

The Chik-Fil-A residency in the Midwest is great. You're guaranteed to have every Sunday and every Holiday off.

I am sure you know this was started in the south.. I dont know if the one you are referring to is a satellite operation..

Im surprised the New Yorkers arent plugging papaya king. The problem is you are pretty limited in your training but still...

So I just checked.. The Chick Fil A residency started in 1946 in a suburb of atlanta.. I think that would make it the 2nd longest running residency outside of Papaya King which is from 1923...

I think the Papaya king residency might have gotten too caught up with themselves and thats why they didnt expand their training much.. they are good at what they do but it is limited.. same for Chick-Fil-A

No they are fully accredited now, and are actually the only Trauma Center in that area of LA (Level II)

For all my chi-town guys out there, the training at Harold's Chicken Shack can't be beat. inner-city population. tons of procedures. Plus, they're old school (1950's), so there's pretty good name recognition.

wouldn't you want to be one of those guys?

I happened to like the Steak N' Shake residency in Indianapolis. The Turtle Chocolate Milkshake fellowship was well-regarded.
I was up in Indy a while back....they have several great programs.....SnS is just the best of them all 👍

I'm not one to dump on a In-n-Out Burger party, but you guys just jumped to the standard response without reading the question! The dude wasn't asking which resident IS best, he was asking what it is about YOUR residency that would make it the best.

For instance, at my residency, it's the barbeque.

Well here in Tucson we have Los Betos which might be the finest mexican fast food in all the land. Guacamole is superd and the carne asada is amazing..

You have to be bilingual though...

The worst residency in the land is located in Indianapolis....White Castle! You spend your entire first 12 months in the department making "steamy burgers!" That place being so close to the hospital dropped Indy 3 slots for me!

 Well, if you do a White Castle residency, you'll become quite proficient at treating diarrhea. There is a reason a White Castle burger is also known as a "slip and slide".

I would say that a seedy taco joint known as Filberto's would be the best place to do residency here. I'm willing to bet they give excellent exposure to food borne illnesses and grease burns.

Actually, its not papaya king. Its the coveted Gray's Papaya. Of course, we try adn keep it on the DL, its so special. 😍 😍 😍

ahh thats right.. i used to eat at that place 2x a week when i lived in nyc.. I totally forgot the name.. I think once the krebs cycle was committed to memory something had to get pushed out..

Hapeville, Georgia to be exact.

I miss Chick-fil-A. We have none in Connecticut. Nothing like awesome food that is reasonably healthy.

I think it's highly overrated. When I was in med school, all the religious-types really loved that place, and used to rave about it. I tried it once, and thought "Meh, mediocre at best". Am I missing something?

yes, its a NYC secret. It is fantastic and hence why it is so special. papaya juicy thing with hot dogs........ *sigh*

And yes, you are missing something GV, probably extra extra pickles.. and a super sized lemonade.

I have had some of my favorite meals in my life at Filiberto's! Good food, large quantities, cheap prices, and fast! Can't beat it!

FWIW I went to the mall with MrsFetus and we had chik-fil-a she was not impressed.. i still love it though..

Closest one to you is either in MA or Jersey.

...and they say there's nothing good in Jersey...

I'm addicted to Chick-fil-A. Their chicken sandwiches are the best, and surprisingly not that high in fat (like 30% of calories if you get the wheat bun without butter).

Mmmm...chicken strips

Mmmm...waffle fries

I've been to VA/NC twice in the last year and didn't make it to Chick-Fil-A either time!!

To break away from the fast food thing:

My residency is the best since we are the syphilis capital of the nation. Where else would you hear "doc I think this thing is eating my d**k".

I thought Baltimore had the lock on syphilis?

I mean shouldn't it at least be MsFetus,if not LaProfessoraFetus?

on a similar note we had a psych patient try to get one of our docs to give him a hand job..
