I'm a resident considering going into glaucoma. I was hoping that those with a bit of insight into this could suggest which programs may be considered the "best" (besides the obvious bpei and duke).

I realize this is totally subjective. By best I mean a stellar surgical experience (lots of traditional trabs and tubes as well as newer techniques such as istent, cannaloplasty, etc) as well as a productive research environment. Though I don't foresee time for tons of research during fellowship I *may* want to go into academics and do enjoy research...

Anyhow, all thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Bascom Palmer
Wills
Lindstrom's fellowship in Minnesota
Jules Stein

Those immediately come to mind.

Good luck.

Definitely Duke, like you said. Don't know about the others.

When I interviewed for glaucoma fellowship 2 years ago, these were the places where I thought they had good surgical glaucoma numbers and good academic environment to do research.

Duke
Bascom Palmer
Wills
UCLA
USC
UC Davis
Utah
Hopkins
Baylor
Emory

I interviewed mostly in the west coast and east cost. Don't know too much about the midwest programs.

In the fellowship you will be mostly doing Trabs and Tubes. You probably won't get much experience with the newer procedures as a fellow (istent, trabectome, canaloplasty, etc).

hope that helps.

USC is a great place but I would be cautious nowadays since glaucoma department lost 2 of its prominent members recently.

I know that Dr. Varma has left last year to become the chairman at UIC. Who else has left recently?

I have first hand knowledge both considered leaving at the same point. I guess Dr. Chopra did not follow through. Good for USC!

Thanks a lot, that's really helpful.

I know that Toronto's Fellowship under Ike Ahmed is supposed to be great, but does anyone have anymore info on it. I looked at the website and it doesn't say how many fellows they take, what the salary is etc. If anyone has anymore details, I'd love to hear.

The best fellowship is the one that has good surgical numbers and in my case, provided a decent wage. If you just want a good name for a potential academic job regardless of low surgical numbers and crappy pay, then go to some of the institutions already mentioned. I would say UAB would be one of my favorites if I had to do it all over again (great glaucoma and cataract volume).

I'd add Oregan....Although it may have changed now with some of the changes in the dept.

On a separate note, do you guys think that glaucoma gives you more advantage in terms of opportunities as compared to let's say cornea? It seems that there are way fewer glaucoma specialists available in competitive areas, even in desirable academic departments.

As a cornea specialist I would say yes, but it could just be my bias.

100% yes.

Yes but at the end of the day it's still glaucoma

Definitely yes.

That's what I figured. It seems that's at cornea guys I know around here do mostly comprehensive (non-academic) and there are plenty of them. Thanks for your opinions.

Does anyone have opinions or information on University Eye specialists in chicago, any of the new orleans programs, or programs that are strong clinically and surgically. I am not much interested in research. Any help would be appreciated.

Any thoughts or insight into the glaucoma fellowship at U Michigan by any chance??

Thanks again

any thoughts or insider knowledge on the program at Utah??

you guys are awesome, thanks for all the info!

Bump. Now that more than a year has gone by, I'm wondering if any of last years or this years applicants/fellows have any updated information or thoughts? I'm still a little ways off, but interested in starting to gather info and research. Thoughts on the top overall programs across the country? Which programs have the best clinical and surgical experiences, including cataract numbers on top of a wide variety of glaucoma procedures? I may be asking too much at this point, so any additional input would be excellent!
