So, if money weren't especially an issue (within reason) what would you love to have to commemorate your graduation from residency? My husband's residency graduation is coming up and I want to get him something special. He has all the toys... (iphone, apple notebook, netbook, ipod x 3!) is learning a new language, new daddy of 2 1/2 year old and 6 month old. I was thinking of monogrammed scrubs to start out his new job all fresh, but it sounded a little boring to me. Any ideas? 😕

A kick-ass vacation comes to mind... or a splurge "experience" - like Indy Car Driver or Fighter Pilot for a day, or something like that. Doing something that will give amazing memories always seems better than an object to possess. And it sounds like he's already got the toys.

Check out the offerings at www.greatamericandays.com for some ideas. Some of them aren't cheap, but I can't imagine anything cooler than a 3 hour parabolic flight simulating space travel.

4K might be a lot, but the Indy Car experience is only $500... a biplane flight for $250, or even Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp...

Beer of the month club.

Still the best present my wife has gotten me.

Awesome seats to whatever sporting event he loves (i.e. 50-yard line, lower level club seats to an NFL game; skybox at a MLB game; courtside tickets to NCAA/NBA...you'll have to wait for the new season to start up on this one).

Guaranteed he'll remember the experience.

This or the kick ass vacation would be my vote. It sounds like he has a lot of stuff (I'm assuming he has a fairly new, large LCD/Plasma TV??), so an experience of sorts would be perfect.

I too agree with something to remember, not something to play with and then put aside.

Go with the monogrammed scrubs, he will always remember the day when everyone who met him for the first time formed the opinion that he is a doooooooooosh.

not really - it's pretty common in EM to have monogrammed scrubs since most of us don't wear jackets....my program supplies them and all of the residents and attendings wear them..

anyway, i would go nuts if someone got me courtside seats to my beloved pistons...driving around in a turbo 911 for a day would be sweet...go with an experience

haha, although I've seen lots of docs with monogrammed scrubs too, this was pretty f'in funny...

Go DO something cool. He'd probably buy monogrammed scrubs anyway, but he probably would not otherwise get a hot stone massage on the hood of a ferrari while watching the Dallas cowboys play a special away game in the galapagos islands.

I don't know if anyone else here is a hockey fan, but yesterday was the day that my PITTSBURGH PENGUINS won the Stanley Cup.... it also happened to be the day that I dressed up in big black robes and walked across the stage to receive my degree. The Pens victory made for a pretty bad-ass graduation present, if you don't mind me sayin' so myself.

Thanks for the responses. After an exhaustive research for the perfect "experience" gift (no symphonies or theater tickets available in the summer, not interested in sports or cars etc.) I finally decided to splurge on a nice watch for him as he has been sporting his Wal-mart watch for the last few years. Luckily, he loves his Tag Heuer and it will look great on his wrist as he starts working in the real world!

Happy graduation to those graduating this month!😍
